Rain and romance fill Capital Repertory Theatre with their touching and humorous staging of John Patrick Shanley's "Outside Mullingar." Though confronting themes such as death, acceptance, and self-discovery, the play is a gentle, comedic telling of a feel good, relatable story for all.
Set in the Village of Killucan in Ireland, just outside Mullingar, the play follows Anthony Reilly (David Kenner), a middle aged farmer striving to finally gain acceptance from his dying father. His father, Tony (Kenneth Kimmins), is reluctant to pass down the family farm to Anthony, uncertain if he is fit to run the land.
Right next door is Rosemary Muldoon (Kim Stauffer), also middle aged, with her ailing mother Aoife (Laurie O'Brien). Rosemary is determined to convince Tony to bestow The Farm upon Anthony, revealing her true passion along the way.
The first act starts off quite gloomy, with both families returning from the funeral of Rosemary's father. However, Shanley has done a marvelous job at incorporating comedy into some of the more serious moments of the play, along the plot line to move along steadily while constantly keeping the attention of the audience.
Kenner has previously appeared in "Hamlet" and "Red" at Cap Rep. His portrayal of Anthony in "Outside Mullingar" is heart touching and moving, proving once again why he is a Capital Region favorite. Kimmins and O'Brien both fit nicely into mold written by Shanley and deliver some of the best parts throughout act 1, both humorous and sentimental. Stauffer's portrayal of Rosemary is passionate, true, and easily relatable to many who refuse to give up or let go.
Director Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill has done a great job at opening the Rep's fall season with this beautiful staging of "Outside Mullingar." Whether you're well along in age or just starting to discover your true identity, "Outside Mullingar" is the perfect remedy for any looking for a two hour, relaxing, and heartwarming getaway.
