Dynamic and energetic performing arts programs make Med-O-Lark’s theater one of the busiest areas in camp. The highly professional productions that campers participate in create a ‘Broadway-like’ atmosphere that is electric. The heart of the theater program lies in the four major productions. The play, the musical and the cabaret are offered to four, six and eight week campers, and the one-act play is designed specifically for two week campers. All of Med-O-Lark’s productions are produced, performed and recorded on campus, in the theater. Eight week campers have the opportunity to act and/or sing in one, two or all three of the fully mounted and staged productions, which are performed during the last week of the session in front of the entire camp community. As a compliment to the larger productions, workshops in improv, set design, scene study, monologues, Shakespeare, mime, stage combat, performance art and voice lessons are offered. Like all activities at Med-O-Lark, the theater and music programs are designed to accommodate campers of all abilities.
Med-O-Lark’s performing arts program is formulated to foster inclusion, promote respect for each camper’s abilities and to present an opportunity for children to develop their skills in an enriching, non-competitive environment. Music classes range from those designed for the true beginner to those designed for the advanced player. Med-O-Lark’s music program is equipped with acoustic and electric guitars, basses, keyboards, percussion equipment and drum sets. Campers are also welcome and encouraged to bring their own instruments from home. In addition to having an extensive array of musical instruments, Med-O-Lark houses a professional recording studio, complete with all of the equipment necessary for campers to create and produce their own CDs. While attending music classes, the formal musical training that campers receive from staff is just the beginning. Campers are encouraged to experiment and collaborate on their own. As a result, some of the most exciting collaborations each summer arise from campers’ creativity. Campers have the ability to showcase their considerable talents to the entire camp community in musical productions, recitals and also at the Musical and Cabaret Pit Band performances.
