The classic fairytale ballet, "The Sleeping Beauty" will come to life on the Martha Cohen Stage from June 1-2, 2019.
The fairytale tells the story of how a young Princess Aurora got cursed by the evil fairy Carabosse. During the princess's christening, fairies give her the gift of the best character traits. Carabosse arrives uninvited to the celebration and sets a curse upon Aurora: on her 16th birthday, Aurora will prick her finger and die. The Queen and King outlaw any and all needles from the kingdom, but when a bouquet of roses with a spindle hidden inside is given to Aurora, fate cannot be avoided. Instead of dying, she is put to sleep for 100 years only to be awoken by true love's kiss.
"The Sleeping Beauty" is produced by the Jeunesse Classique Ballet Society. The essence of the society is education, and this is shown as the ballet will feature pre-professional aspiring dancers from grade 1 level ballet to the solo seal level, as well as professional guest dancers.
The ballet will be performed to Tchaikovsky's music and will feature Marius Petipa's classic choreography. It is sure to be an event the whole family can enjoy.
