The 18th Annual CAT Awards saw 110 Nominees over 20 Categories
Saturday, August 27, 2022, marked the 18th Annual CAT Awards, a celebration of Calgary's Community Theatre at the University of Calgary's MacEwan Ballroom.
The annual Calgary Amature Theatre Awards is an event that celebrates the quality of work that Calgarians can expect to see from Community Theatre in Calgary and surrounding areas. The CAT Awards are produced by Calgary-ACTS (Calgary's Alliance of Community Theatres) which focuses on promoting community theatre in Calgary, by informing its members and the public of events related to the arts, and providing a communication and support network for its members.
Recipients of the CAT Awards are determined by a combined process of public nomination and adjudication. We encourage everyone to attend community theatre productions, and then nominate their favourites throughout the upcoming 2022-2023 season. Please visit www.calgary-acts.com to nominate anyone (starting September 1st), or if you have any questions about the CAT Awards or Calgary-ACTS.
This year, the CAT Awards is recognizing productions that took place over the past two theatre seasons (July 2020 through June 2022). During this time there were a total of 34 productions from 14 different community theatre member companies, and 21 of these productions from 10 companies received nominations. Overall, there were 110 nominees spread out over 20 award categories. Calgary-ACTS is proud to recognize two recipients for the Sandy Singer Award for Outstanding Contribution to Community Theatre this year.
First, the members of the Calgary theatre community took a moment to recognize the incredible life and contributions of Frank MacLeod who passed away on August 3rd. Frank was recognized for his contributions as a Costume Designer in Calgary beginning in 2000 with Front Row Centre Player's production of The Rocky Horror Show.
The second Sandy Singer Award went to Alan Leboeuf for his ongoing work as an actor, director, producer, playwright, and board member. Alan has been President of Workshop Theatre Society 3 times since 2001, led Confederation Theatre since 2015, and has served various roles on the Pumphouse Theatre Society board.
Every year, theatre companies are given the opportunity to honour their exceptional volunteers. These volunteers are people who have gone above and beyond the normal to ensure that the show, project, or event they are working on is a success.
