Known for her dark, absurdist humor and "hair-raising singing voice," Erin creates an at once riotous and unexpectedly moving performance about figuring out who you might be. Audra Mae
July 17 at 7:30 PM
$12
Growing up, show business was in Audra Mae's blood. Her great grandmother, Virginia, was a member of the Gumm Sisters, whose youngest member, Francis Ethel Gumm, grew up to be Judy Garland. Her paternal grandmother turned her on to country and folk artists, while her maternal grandfather introduced her to jazz. Since arriving in California nine years ago, Audra Mae has done alright for herself. She landed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell, multiple TV placements on the hit F/X series, Sons of Anarchy, The Good Wife, and in 2009, wrote the lyrics to "Who I Was Born to Be," the only original song on Susan Boyle's chart-topping, 9 million-selling I Dreamed a Dream album. And now Audra Mae has seen her own dream come true. She recorded and co-produced her last album, Audra Mae & The Almighty Sound. Audra describes this album as "the closest I've come to putting my soul to music the way I wanted to." The album was released in February of 2012 to critical acclaim. Since the release of her sophomore album, Audra Mae has been busy and is now back in the studio beginning work on album #3.
FEDERICO AUBELE
July 17 at 9:30 PM
$20
Federico Aubele returns to a smoky realm of acoustic guitar licks, heavy rhythms and sinister dub atmospherics for his fourth studio album, Berlin 13. The record pulls from the personal transformation Aubele experienced in his time living in Berlin and the vibe of a city strongly associated with electronic music. To set the tone for this album, Aubele revisited his deepest musical influences, focusing on those he believed essential in his formation as an artist. From the backing beats to the musique-concrete samples, and the nylon string guitar layered with his baritone voice, the result is a blending of the elements in his unique style. He had a formal musical education and was exposed to a lot of 20th century composers and styles. He was fascinated with Schoenberg's atonalism, Stockhausen's explorations in electroacoustic music and musique concrete and Ligeti's tone clusters. The core of his music is a combination of electronic music, dub, classical guitar and the experiments those composers conducted in the 50′s and 60′s.
Chris SmithER
July 18 at 7:00 PM
$25
Chris Smither's 12th studio record -- is a masterwork. It sports the unmistakable sound he has made his trademark: fingerpicked acoustic guitar and evocative sonic textures meshed with spare, brilliant songs, delivered in a bone-wise, hard-won voice. It is also his first recording to feature all Smither-penned, original songs. Having distilled his own Signature Sound of blues and folk for over 40 years, Chris Smither is truly an American original. A profound songwriter, Chris continues to draw deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets and philosophers with this 14th record of his lengthy career. Reviewers continue to praise his dazzling guitar work, gravelly voice and songwriting. The New York Times: With a weary, well-traveled voice and a serenely intricate finger-picking style, Mr. Smither turns the blues into songs that accept hard-won lessons and try to make peace with fate.
LENKA
July 18 at 9:30 PM
$15
Motherhood changes a person, so it must also hold true that motherhood affects anything a person creates. It did for Lenka, who found herself reflecting on life in a new way when it came time to create her third album, Shadows, a quietly hushed collection of emotionally-charged lullabies. After the release of her second album, Two, in 2011, Lenka began penning new music, gathering songs from a variety of sessions throughout her pregnancy and first few months as a mother. Shadows brings Lenka to a new place in her life and musical career. The album is a beautiful, captivating collection of peaceful, introspective numbers that are both calming and thoughtful. The songs are both deeply personal and highly relatable - even for those who haven't experienced the affecting moment of new parenthood.
