Tyce Green to Make New York City Concert Debut at 54 BELOW

Houston is coming to New York City, y'all! And I couldn't be more excited. Having been in Greater New York for about six months now, I have been going through major Houston theatre scene withdrawals. Soon, Tyce Green will be making his New York City cabaret debut in CUZ WE'RE F#CKING TALENTED at the intimate 54 BELOW, which is lovingly refereed to as Broadway's living room. Joining him are Houston favorites Arielle Murphy and Holland Vavra and Broadway veterans Katie Rose Clarke (also from Houston), Constantine Maroulis, Anthony Rapp, Kate Rockwell, and more.

So what exactly is CUZ WE'RE F#CKING TALENTED? "[It's] this cool thing that [54 BELOW is] trying: 'What can we do if we can bring some really amazing people that everybody knows, and mix it with some unknowns and give them an opportunity to sing along side of all of these really great people? And, just make an excuse to do a show where it's literally like we go in and just kick ass,'" explains Tyce Green. "It's just an excuse to get up and wail on something that you love," he elaborates. And while that may seem a bit self-indulgent, as someone who has been to 54 BELOW several times now, I can assure you it is not. In all actuality, the show is the 11:30 p.m. performance on Monday, December 8. With that said, this concert is attempting (and most likely will be) the most just-go-with-the-flow and have fun with it cabaret of the week (or month).

Even though it'll be a night of multiple acts belting, riffing, screlting, and entertainment for entertainment's sake, Tyce Green is still feeling a lot of pressure to blow New York audiences away. "Everybody knows everyone, and we can all kind of band together, do what we want, and feel really safe in Houston. In New York, I'm finding that the pressure is so much more. You can't just sort of get up there and expect to be well received. Not that New York isn't a community, but you have to be on. It's kind of intimidating, actually, being in the company of all these amazing people," he says. "The great news is that I know most of them, and obviously Constantine [Maroulis], he's become like my big brother, so that's helpful. He's sort of taking me under his wing," points out Tyce Green.

Naturally, scenarios where Broadway veterans and stars take on up-and-coming talent as mentees isn't unheard of, but these stories and invaluable relationships always make us smile. "Tyce has become my little brother. He is a smart kid. He's overcome a lot of obstacles in his young life to become a really smart, young theatre professional already in terms of his work ethic and his drive. And, I think over the next ten years, he's going to be an important figure in the Broadway community and beyond," Constantine Maroulis tells BroadwayWorld. "[Tyce Green is] a really interesting artist on many levels. He's got a cool look, and he's a gifted young actor as well as a great singer and musician," he explains. And in terms of their professional and friendship bonds, he says, "I'm a New York kind of guy, you know, born in Brooklyn and raised in Jersey. I give it to him straight up. I feel like my drive as a performer has rubbed off on him already. He's gotten to be a good friend of mine. He can wear many hats. He can be a fellow performer, someone who I am producing a show with, and he can run around as my assistant. You know, he's capable of giving me a critique or two if I need one. He's a good colleague, definitely."

Houston has always served as a great resume builder for those hoping to make a splash in New York City. Like others before him, Tyce Green has taken full advantage of professional opportunities in the city and is now bringing his brand of performance to the big city. I'm certainly looking forward to embracing him and all the other Houstonians taking the stage on December 8, 2014 at CUZ WE'RE F#CKING TALENTED, and hopefully some other Texas ex-pats and even Texan tourists will find their way into the cozy venue for a rocking Monday night of high-octane performances.
