After a sold out performance in February, trans actor, performer and writer, Becca Blackwell returns to Joe's Pub with laugh out loud family tragedy, They, Themself and Schmerm, for two nights only, Sunday, June 24th (Gay Pride Day) and Tuesday, June 26th.
Described by Theatre Is Easy as a "powerhouse of self-love, pulling off an uber-personal set that even the most seasoned comic could never fathom attempting" Becca Blackwell triumphantly dives headfirst into trans life. Mixing autobiography, raunchy stand-up and playful audience participation They, Themself and Schmerm (schmerm being the sound that people make as they try to figure out Becca's gender: she...he...hrmmm) is a show created about being yourself when "yourself" is what your world chooses to politicize the most. Becca engages in loving confrontation with the audience, asking what it truly means to be authentic in these meat carcasses.
Becca's disturbingly hilarious personal tale, inspired by a self produced video by Corey Haim called Me, Myself and I, came to the stage through collaboration with acclaimed artist and performer Jill Pangallo (Mediocre and Loving It!, Your Main Thing) and celebrated trans playwright and performer Jess Barbagallo (My Old Man (And Other Stories), Harry Potter and the Cursed Child). The play was directed by and developed with Ellie Heyman, director of theatre, music and film best known for The Traveling Imaginary, a theatrical rock show rated "top five shows of the year" by NPR and a Time Out "Critic's Pick" on two continents.
