The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Mara Manus) and Joe's Pub (Director, Shanta Thake; General Manager Kevin Abbott) are proud to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Joe's Pub with an unprecedented 300 shows from September through December. During that time, Joe's Pub will welcome back many of the artists who have cemented its reputation as the most influential nightclub in New York while continuing the Public Theater's remarkable tradition of supporting and nurturing new artists. 10th Anniversary tickets go on sale Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 12 PM.
This fall, Joe's Pub will feature artists who have had their US debuts at Joe's Pub; have recorded live albums at Joe's Pub; got their break in the music industry through showcases at Joe's Pub; and many more. In the new series 10 For The 10th, Joe's Pub hosts 10 free shows over the course of one weekend in October; the Artists in Conversation series features many of the artists who have histories with Joe's Pub and the Public Theater; and "Master Storyteller"
Mike Daisey returns with a biting new monologue as a part of the Public Theater's 2008-09 season. The Country Music Association returns with their Songwriter Series, solidifying Joe's Pub as the premier roots/American destination in New York City, while veteran Joe's Pub performers
Sandra Bernhard,
Jackie Hoffman, and
Billy Porter, among others, keep the venue's cabaret tradition alive.
"The 10th anniversary is a great opportunity for us to reflect on the immense breadth of talent that has come through our doors while continuing to set the standard for live entertainment in New York, the country, and the world," said Joe's Pub Director Shanta Thake. "We have created a space where literally anything is possible. From hip-hop to country, dance to jazz, and Broadway to Bach, you can see it at Joe's Pub."
"In the last 10 years Joe's Pub has become an integral part of the Public Theater's mission and the cultural life of New York," said Public Theater Artistic Director
Oskar Eustis. "Under its inspired director, Shanta Thake, the Pub will continue to be a beacon to musicians and artists who refuse to be segregated, pigeonholed, or made into commodities."
Joe's Pub's genre-blind booking policy is a direct nod to the legacy of its namesake and Public Theater founder,
Joseph Papp. Joe's Pub is guided by the Public Theater's mission of inclusion and cultivating connections between artists and audiences across ethnicity, age, and experience. Since its opening in 1998, previous programmers
Bill Bragin, Bonnie Metzgar, and Walter Durkacz among others have brought their signature styles to the room, presenting over 7,000 performances. Six Grammy Award winners for Best New Artist from the past 10 years have played at Joe's Pub, including
John Legend,
Alicia Keys, and Amy Winehouse. Joe's Pub has also introduced bold new voices such as
Gavin DeGraw,
Joss Stone, and Martha Wainwright, while giving some of the most influential artists of our time, including
Elvis Costello,
Allen Toussaint,
Lesley Gore, and
Pete Townshend an intimate home to try out new projects.
Designed and operated by Serge Becker and Josh Pickard, Joe's Pub LLC continues to offer exceptional food service that has made the venue a stand out in the hospitality industry. The lush interior design has created the intimate space that has attracted artists and audiences alike.
"Joe's Pub is proud to be the premier live music venue in the country in addition to the finest bar, lounge, and restaurant for atmosphere, food, service, and overall customer experience," said General Manager Kevin Abbott. "As we enter our second decade, we continue our commitment to excellence in service and entertainment."
