At SING! SING! SING! events, co-hosts Anne Phillips and Michael Shepley provide piano and anecdotal accompaniment, respectively, and the audience raises its voice in song. Lyric sheets are provided to keep everyone happily in sync.
Previous SING! events have included tributes to Cole Porter, Oscar Hammerstein II, MGM musicals, Nat King Cole, and different themes like singing, dancing, and travel. "Mr. Berlin's titles tell us how to handle the challenges of the recession," said Shepley. "Let yourself go. Shakin' the blues away. Let's take an old-fashioned walk. Soft lights and sweet music. Say it isn't so."
"Berlin's seemingly effortless lyrics and unforgettable melodies are a joy to play," said Phillips, who puts the songs in keys that men and women can sing together. "And it's amazing how they come back to memory in an instant. The man is an American institution."
