MICHAEL MWENSO'S DOWNTOWN SPEAKEASY: THE PROHIBITED JAZZ AGE
Friday, May 30 at 11:30 PM
$15
Jazz vocalist and bandleader Michael Mwenso offers a collection of shameless and explicit tunes from the 1920s and 1930s that were banned from being broadcast in their era. The playful nature of these songs is timeless - not simply because they are funny and over-the-top, but because they are a reminder that romance and sexuality are, and always have been, universal human experiences. This will be an exhilarating and rowdy night of jazz, wit and delight plus a few surprises.
A fixture of the Uptown jazz scene, Mwenso brings his signature style and vocal chops downtown to the Pub. From a young age, the Sierra Leone-born singer and pianist has held his own with artists like James Brown in addition to playing in and leading his own bands around the world. In late 2010, Mwenso, personally invited by Wynton Marsalis, joined the programming team at Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he now heads the After-Hours program at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. In his growing and remarkable career, Michael has performed with Jon Hendricks, Jamie Cullum, Reginald Veal, Maceo Parker, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marsalis, and more.
NORA JANE STRUTHERS & THE PARTY LINE
Saturday, May 31 at 7:00 PM
$15
Nora Jane Struthers & The Party Line are a traveling carnival of acoustic Americana, on tour in support of their aptly named album Carnival (2013). The high energy, Nashville-based quintet performs Struthers's original story-songs with tight, three-part harmonies, fiddle, claw-hammer banjo, acoustic guitar, bass and drums. "When you go to a carnival, you go into a sideshow tent, and on every stage you find a different person with a different story," says Struthers. "That's what I'm trying to do with this album - craft vignettes, and in some cases more developed narratives, about imaginary people's lives." The moving, perceptive and witty songs on Carnival represent a quantum leap for Struthers, born of hard work and deep reflection. "Over the past three years, as I've been touring and performing, I realized that primarily I'm a storyteller," she says. "I've been working to hone my skills so I can do that better."
The Party Line, named after a Carnival track that refers to the early days of rural telephone calls, includes: Joe Overton (clawhammer banjo and harmony vocals), Jack Devereaux (fiddle), Nick DiSebastian (upright bass and guitar) and Drew Lawhorn (drums). Struthers was catapulted into the spotlight when she led her band to a Blue Ribbon at the prestigious 2010 Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

REVEREND BILLY & THE STOP-STOPPING CHOIR: THE HONEYBEELUJAH! SHOW
Sundays, June 1 - June 22 at 2:00 PM
$15
Reverend Billy & the Stop-Shopping Choir return to Joe's Pub for a two-month residency after last year's performances in Chase Bank lobbies and New York jails and courts. In 2013, they were inspired by the extinction and resurrection of the Golden Toad. This year, the Honey Bee is the hero. The presence of the pesticides of "Big Ag" and the struggle by bees to survive is inspiration for new songs, songs with lots of Bee-atitude, hard work and sticky sweetness. Honeybeelujah!
Reverend Billy and his singing-activists ask: What time is this? Time to party before the plague? Or is it more like the 20's between world wars? In 2014, stepping on stage amidst fire and drought, freak storms and extinction, there seems to be a strange joy in these first days of apocalypse. They seek to rededicate themselves and others to the politicizing of survival, pitting our freedom against the financiers of climate change.

TY CITERMAN: BOP KABBALAH ALBUM RELEASE
Monday, June 2 at 7:30 PM
$15
Ty Citerman celebrates the May 27 release of his latest album Bop Kabbalah (Tzadik Records, Radical Jewish Culture series) with a special concert performance by a fantastic new quartet of Ken Thomson (bass clarinet), Ben Holmes (trumpet), Adam D Gold (drums) and Citerman (guitar). Delving deep into his Jewish roots and drawing inspiration from sources like the Beat Generation, medieval Eastern European and Asian music modes, and the rich depths of Kabbalistic mysticism, Citerman has fashioned an intense and colorful program of modernist music that blends klezmer, nigunim, jazz, rock, classical and more. Bop Kabbalah is a glimpse of 21st century new Jewish music.
With the acclaimed punk/jazz/new music ensemble Gutbucket, Citerman has pioneered what Guitar Player called "kinetic punk-jazz opuses." The Guardian called his music "an explosive concoction containing lethal doses of Ornette Coleman, King Crimson, John Zorn, Black Sabbath, Stravinsky and Fugazi." Bop Kabbalah explores Citerman's Jewish life, past and present - a soundtrack of memories and musings: his grandmother's stories; an alternate version of his Bar Mitzvah; the day he played hooky from Hebrew school; his first trip to Israel; old-country recipes, like his killer challah; family arguments; and more. The album is his most ambitious and powerful project to date, and also his most personal.

Full of risk and heart, they weave universal themes into a musical fabric that is entirely original yet feels like you have known the sound your entire life. Jason Fine, of Rolling Stone, called the band "elegant yet raw, darkly emotional but shot through with light...rangy experimental roots rock played with confidence and hope."
Singer-songwriter Peirson Ross is crossing the boundaries of traditional folk music with his experimental, world-influenced melodies. iTunes has called Peirson a "poet with six-string's vocals who reminds fans of a cross between Dave Matthews, Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake".

Kelly Willis, heralded by NPR as "alternative country's golden goddess," returns to the national stage with her husband Bruce Robison. Willis has reigned as a critically acclaimed roots music singer since her recorded debut some two decades ago, and is recognized as a new country and Americana pioneer. Her ever-broadening artistic range and gifts as both a canny writer and interpreter of songs have consistently continued to wow her scores of fans and music critics alike. Robison has made his mark as both a writer of indelible smash #1 hits like "Wrapped" (George Strait), "Angry All The Time" (Tim McGraw & Faith Hill) and "Travelin' Soldier" (Dixie Chicks) and an artist in his own right who boasts a series of eight albums rich with his laconic yet potent grace and emotional dead aim as a songwriter and singer.
But as this couple in life, love and parenthood now unite as a band, it is more about the promise and thrills of the new than their considerable solo legacies and the laurels they've already earned. "We've been playing together occasionally over the years," explains Willis. "And it's always been really special. So we just thought we'd like to try a real collaboration where we pull from each other's strengths and create a new entity apart from our separate ones."
