Broadway, film, television and recording star Rachel York will perform her acclaimed cabaret For the Love of It at the Metropolitan Room at Gotham on Sunday, May 4, at 9:30 p.m. York brings the show Variety calls "wonderfully entertaining and extremely funny" back to New York for a one-night-only special engagement. The Metropolitan Room has been hailed by New York Magazine as the Best of New York Cabaret for 2008.
For the Love of It is a delightful evening of stories and song in which York celebrates her love of singing and performing. She includes numbers made famous by early inspirations, favorite show tunes from her Broadway career, jazz and pop standards from her solo album, Let's Fall in Love, and a few surprises that touch her heart in a special way. Critics have hailed her cabaret as "crowd pleasing and purely delicious," "a blissful night of entertainment," and "an experience not to be missed." Cabaret Scenes called it "perfection."
York's Metropolitan Room appearance is part of an East Coast swing for the award winning actress. On Saturday, May 3, she will be a special guest soloist at the State Theatre of New Jersey performing in a benefit concert titled From Broadway to Brunswick conceived and conducted by Marvin Hamlisch. On Tuesday, May, 6, she will be the headliner for the annual fundraising Gala of the New Repertory Theatre in Watertown, Massachusetts. From there she travels to Tel Aviv, singing an evening of Rodgers and Hammerstein classics with the Jerusalem Symphony at the Israeli Opera.
The multi-talented York is best known for her inspired Broadway performances in City of Angels, Les Misérables, Victor/Victoria (Drama Desk Award) with Dame Julie Andrews, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Sly Fox with Richard Dreyfuss, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels co-starring Jonathan Pryce. Additionally, York has starred in the national tour of Camelot (Carbonelle Award) opposite Michael York; Putting It Together (Drama Desk Nomination) also with Julie Andrews; the national and London tours of the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Kiss Me, Kate (Helen Hayes Nomination); Dessa Rose at the Lincoln Center Theater (Drama Desk Nomination); Anything Goes (Ovation Nomination), My One and Only, and The Odd Couple with Jason Alexander and Martin Short at Reprise! in Los Angeles; Ragtime; Evita; Summer of '42; Summer and Smoke; and Crucifer of Blood with Billy Crudup.
In concert, York's recent appearances include Broadway Showstoppers with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, The Sound of Music at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of John Mauceri, the National Symphony and the Pittsburgh Pops under the direction of conductor Marvin Hamlisch, and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in Denver. She has also performed For the Love of It at Feinstein's at Loews Regency in New York and Sterling's Upstairs in Los Angeles, and she has been a featured guest soloist in numerous tribute programs singing the works of Sondheim, Porter, Coleman, Gershwin, Wildhorn, Kander and Ebb, Ahrens and Flaherty, Boublil and Schönberg, and many others.
York's film credits include One Fine Day, Billy Bathgate, Killer Instinct, Second Honeymoon, Au Pair II, and her courageous portrayal of Lucille Ball in the CBS made for television movie, Lucy. Her performances in Kiss Me, Kate (filmed for PBS's Great Performances series) and Victor/Victoria are available on video/DVD. York has also appeared on several popular TV series including Hannah Montana, Frasier, Reba, Numb3rs, Close to Home, Arli$$, Spin City, The Naked Truth and Diagnosis Murder. In addition, she is the voice of Bitty in Higglytown Heroes and Circe on The Justice League.
York's debut solo album, Let's Fall in Love, has been an enormous success since its release in January 2005. She can also be heard on the soundtrack of Billy Bathgate, the live in concert recording of Broadway Showstoppers: Best of the Tonys with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, and the original cast recordings of City of Angels, Putting It Together, Victor/Victoria, The Scarlet Pimpernel Encore, Dessa Rose, and Summer of '42.
