After performances that generated standing ovations from SRO crowds, and subsequently earned a 2015 BroadwayWorld.com New York Cabaret Award nomination for "Best Alt Cabaret Show," Raquel Cion is bringing Me & Mr. Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie back to The Slipper Room, the popular burlesque/variety club on New York's Lower East Side (167 Orchard Street), for a three-show run beginning Thursday, March 24 at 8 pm (with additional shows on April 21 and May 15, also 8 pm). Tickets are $15 General Admission; $25 for Reserved. www.slipperroom.com
Hailed by The New York Times as "half witch and half cabaret performer," Raquel Cion first discovered the music of David Bowie when she was barely a teen and became an instant, passionate, and lifelong fan. Almost 35 years later, and less than two months before the music legend died of cancer, Ms. Cion performed her solo Alt-Cabaret show Me & Mr. Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie, at The Slipper Room (after introducing the show earlier last year at Judson Art Wednesdays, Open Swim, and The PIT Loft).
In this show--featuring additional songs and new material--the self-described "psycho-delicate girl" explores her "soul love" for David Bowie, arguably one of the most important contemporary artists of the past 50 years. Ms. Cion's personal stories and the deep cuts of some of her favorite David Bowie songs are the fuel this artist uses to rocket us through her inner space-coming of age as an outsider; navigating the celestial realms of love, mid-life crisis and loss; and ultimately finding acceptance and hope in the embrace of David Bowie's artistry. Under the direction of Tim Cusack (Theatre Askew), Musical Direction by Karl Saint Lucy, and Costumes by David Quinn, Ms. Cion's band features Jeremy Bass, Guitar; John Brodeur, Bass; Isai Centeno, Vocals; Michael Morales, Drums; Karl Saint Lucy, Piano; DM Salsberg, Vocals.
"My set list for this show are driven by the stories I'm telling, that get me through or are my favorites," Cion says. "These David Bowie songs have their own narrative line--melodically, rhythmically, and lyrically that connects but also transcends my monologues/dialogue during the show."
Simon Critchley, a long-time David Bowie aficionado and author of the highly praised biography Bowie (OR Books, 2014), has called Raquel Cion's work in Me & Mr. Jones: My Intimate Relationship With David Bowie a "brilliant virtuoso performance. [She] channels Bowie for the evening and gives us all an abiding sense of how much his work meant to his old fans and still means to his generations of new admirers. Strongly recommended."
