The Broadway at Birdland concert series was thrilled to present Gunhild Carling, known as Sweden's "Queen of Swing," at the club on Sunday, April 22. Ms. Carling absolutely captivated the sold-out house, eliciting many standing ovations and an old-school New Orleans parade through the venue.
Swedish musical sensation Gunhild Carling is an internationally acclaimed superstar whose one-woman show is a can't-miss event! Whether she's singing favorite jazz standards, playing one of many instruments (trumpet, trombone, harmonica, flute, recorder, or jazz bagpipe), Gunhild's sublime showmanship shines through. Carling is a jazz artist of the old breed, combining extraordinary skills on trumpet and trombone with vaudeville stunts. In her playing, she shows heavy influences from Bix and Louie Armstrong as well as
Billie Holiday. As if that weren't enough, Gunhild also tap dances and sings during her shows. This amazing singer and award-winning multi-instrumentalist has been featured on Scott Bradlee's Post Modern Jukebox putting a twenties twist on the eighties tunes "Material Girl," "Never Gonna Give You Up," and "Happy." Gunhild is notorious for playing three trumpets at once and a recent video of her playing bagpipes went viral with over 15 million views.
The Broadway at Birdland concert series takes place every week at the historic music room, which is located at
315 West 44 Street, in the heart of Manhattan's Theater District. Next Monday at 7pm,
Max von Essen will appear in concert with
Billy Stritch at the piano.
