Last night, August 26, for one night only, Rex Smith brought his one-man show, "Confessions of a Teen Idol" to 54 Below, Broadway's Supper Club. Among the friends on hand to cheer Smith on were Oscar and Tony Award winner Kevin Kline (Smith's co-star in The Pirates of Penzance), Emmy Award winner Sally Struthers (Smith's co-star in Grease!), and CNBC commentator Stephen Weiss.
With "Confessions of a Teen Idol" Rex Smith shares with his audience anecdotes including the crazy antics of rock and roll, his excitement and pressures behind a six-album deal as a number one platinum recording artist with Columbia Records, his two years opening for Ted Nugent, his last concert with Lynard Skynard before their plane crash (and what really happened), what lead Rex to become an overnight sensation as Teen Idol that took him around the world, and the despair that came with the title. Smith shares the stories of his television roles on Sooner Or Later, Street Hawk, Solid Gold, As The World Turns, and The Daredevil; and most notable, his sudden rise to Broadway, including antics with Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt during The Pirates of Penzance and receiving the coveted Theatre World Award, leading to Broadway shows with Grease, Grand Hotel, Annie Get Your Gun, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Kiss Me Kate, and Sunset Boulevard... to where he met his 16 year old son, Brandon, for the first time... a son he never knew he had. Audiences join Rex Smith for a musical evening full of rock and Broadway songs, and stories and anecdotes of celebrities from Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt, Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Caine, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Andy Warhol, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith... to Michael Jackson, Andy Gibb, Tatum O'Neal, Dorothy Hamill, Diahann Carroll.
