Susan Mack brought her show "Nobody Else But Me" back to the Don't Tell Mama Cabaret room in NYC on January 19th. Sold out in her run there last November, the show was brought back in for a special one night only reprise. And sell it out she did, again!
Susan's material brought a solid American Songbook standards theme to the evening. Some older, some newer.
Supported by a talented trio of musicians led by Takaaki Otomo on piano, Steve Doyle on bass, and Daniel Glass on drums, this show was directed and arranged by the masterful Marilyn Maye. When a singer wants to delve into the American Songbook there's no one more adept to lead the journey than Ms. Maye, and Susan proves an apt traveler.
The festivities kicked off with a medley that announced "This Will Be My Shining Hour" and that we had "Such A Lot of Livin To Do"...then led easily into such songs as a jazzy latin tinged "Where Or When", an equally cool "Sunday Kind Of Love", "Save Your Love For Me", and a slowed down "I Didn't Know What Time It Was".
Interspersed throughout were stories of Ms. Mack's early performance sojourns and her detour into the world of work in the financial industry and building a family. Stories that often led into lighter comic territory with songs like "Sunny Side Of The Street", "You've Got Possibilities", "The Ladies Who Lunch", "I'm Hip", and wrapping up with a toe tappin "It Don't Mean A Thing".
She nailed a particularly effective ending to "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life" and of course the show starts and ends with the appropriate theme of I Wanna Be "Nobody Else But Me".
Susan Mack's cool and controlled alto proved well matched to the songs for the evening's set list and one hopes this show will rise again in the Cabaret scene.
