In "Tom... in His Words" Mulder takes Waits at his word, exploring some of his iconic songs ("Downtown Train" and "Ol' 55"), as well as lesser-known treasures like "Broken Bicycles" and "Alice." The 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has always operated on the fringes, blending strains of jazz and the blues, even vaudeville, into his rock ballads and scores. (His soundtrack for "One from the Heart" was nominated for an Oscar.) His '70s albums "Closing Time," and "Nighthawks at the Diner," are often described as cult favorites.
Mulder, who made her cabaret debut in 2010 at Don't Tell Mama, followed that with her critically acclaimed tribute to songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen in 2011. Both shows were directed by singer Karen Oberlin. She appeared at the Mabel Mercer Foundation's Cabaret on Mondays at the National Arts Club at the invitation of the late Donald Smith, an early champion. She was also featured in an all-star tribute to Mickey Leonard at the Metropolitan Room.
Mulder's music charge is $20. For reservations call the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street (between 5th & 6th Avenues), at 212/206-0440 or to order online visit www.metropolitanroom.com.
