A pianist and a singer alone on a stage is usually not my favorite cabaret experience I often feel like I'm listening to a rehearsal and musically reduced version of the the real thing. In the case of Three-Time Oliver Award winner Maria Friedman and her pianist Jason Carr on Feinstein's/54 Below stage last night it probably is the best way to soak up every note of a spectacular concert.
The music of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim have never been in better hands. Maria Friedman has an extraordinary vocal instrument which when combined with her incredible phrasing and acting ability makes her performance of these two composers an experience that will never leave your musical memory. Her brilliant musical director Jason Carr created piano arrangements that would have had composers Sondheim and Bernstein cheering. Although it would have been easier for some fans to hear Maria in London her home town, I can understand why these Brits travelled to New York City for this show. Do not miss Maria Friedman, you only have to travel to 54th street for one of the greatest cabaret performances you will ever have.
