A few feet away from the stage of the Winter Garden where Lainie Kazan played a Ziegfeld showgirl and understudied Barbra Streisand in "Funny Girl", a celebrity-filled audience and devoted fans got to see her appear on the legendary Iridium nightclub's stage.
They weren't disappointed as Ms. Kazan shared stories and songs about her extraordinary career which started after she did get her chance to perform the title role a year and a half after Funny Girl's Broadway opening. The story about how Barbra short circuited Lainie's taking the lead in the show (after all her friends, relatives, and press were told she was going on for a sick Barbra) was heartbreaking but Ms. Kazan has had a great career. She subsequently appeared on Broadway in "The Government Inspector with Tony Randall, "My Favorite Year" with Tim Curry (Tony nomination), and produced and starred in the Ethel Merman tribute, "Doin' What Comes Naturally" She has also performed in "The Vagina Monologues and The Exonerated and many other shows. Laine has many film credits including "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and of course who can forget her many appearances on The Dean Martin TV show. Like Barbra, Lainie was a drop under the weather but she didn't disappoint her audience in any way.
