The Friars were a mens only club until 1988. Last night some great women Friars entertained their fellow members in the newly named Jerry Lewis Monastery.
Remember someone always saying in those 1930 films "lets put on a show"? Well, when someone says that at The Friars Club (and it's said quite often) you can be sure it's going to be a spectacular one. Last night in the Frank Sinatra Dinning Room Les Girls was presented by producers Jamie deRoy & Laura Slutsky. Jamie in fact was the 8th women to join the club, and as she recalls, the New York Times did a story on only the first 7 to become Friars. Laura Slutsky hosted the evening, and a bunch of pretty impressive females sang for a Friars audience consisting of men and women. Rhonda Ross (family name sound familiar?), Lynn Dimenna, Andrea Frierson, Jamie deRoy, The Shapiro Sisters, and Luba Mason entertained in a room that has been home to most of the legends in show business. Ron Abel, Jamie's music director was on hand with Tom Hubbard and Rex Benincasa.
The Friars will be "putting on a show" October 7th at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel as The Friars Foundation, the charitable arm of the club honors Robert De Niro and Carlos Slim. Larry King, Dean of the Friars will be hosting.
