Jim Caruso's Broadway at Birdland concert series had all the traffic Monday night as Klea Blackhurst brought her hit concert, "Everything the Traffic Will Allow" to the Birdland stage. This is Blackhurst's loving tribute to the songs made famous by the quintessential stage personality Ethel Merman. Not an impersonator and not an impressionist, Blackhurst offered a paean to the great Broadway legend that serves as a potent and happy reminder of Merman's sheer, undeniable importance to both the history of twentieth century entertainment and the iconic composers like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Jerry Herman, who wrote songs just for her.
The Birdland night continued with Jim Caruso's Cast Party, the wildly popular weekly soiree that brings a sprinkling of Broadway glitz and urbane wit to the legendary Birdland in New York City every Monday night. It was cool 6 hours Birdland cabaret night-out enlivened by the hilariously impromptu variety show. Showbiz superstars stop in and this night the one and only Clint Homes was on Jim's list as the Cast Party symphony orchestra backed by Steve Doyle on bass, Billy Stritch on piano and Daniel Glass on drums, supplied the music for the up-and-comers, serving up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle.
