There is no one who possesses the skill set of John Pizzarelli. Well, not quite. According to John, whenever he plays some intricate jazz guitar riff for his dad Bucky, the famous father says... "that's pretty good, but listen to this!"
Of course John is also about smooth vocals, scat singing duets with his brilliant guitar playing , a phenomenal sense of humor, and an ability to captivate you with his story telling. It was all blended superbly in his show last night at Cafe Carlyle as John with his trio celebrated the iconic singer-songwriter Johnny Mercer. The trio setting enabled all the melodic dexterous single note interplay between John and consummate pianist Konrad Paszkudzki to cascade through the intimate space of The Carlyle. If there was a poll conducted for who would you most like to have as a guest at a party, John Pizzarelli would be on the top of most folks list. He's one of the happiest musical experiences one can have and I'm sure Bucky Pizzarelli agrees.
If you want to stay happy, scoot across the lobby where Loston Harris keeps the feeling going in Bemelmans Bar.
