The song list given to the lights and sound director Darwin Best at Cafe Carlyle starts off one of the hotels most memorable music offerings
On it are are some of the tunes that have helped sell 72 million records, placed 28 albums in the Billboard 200, including five#1's.
Herb Alpert does not play many notes and they tend to be short in duration. However, they are the perfect notes and they bring you to another time and place. The Cafe Carlyle audience could hardly contain themselves last night. At first it was silent reverence as the nostalgic sounds of his muted trumpet filled the room. No, it wasn't Pandora or Sirius, it was the man himself Herb Alpert. I watched, listened and mostly kept thinking, so this is how it's done! Just these five musicians are creating that sound I grew up with. In 1974 Herb married the other sound that I grew up with - - Lani Hall! (lead singer Brazil 66). Unlike the brash Wedding & Bar Mitzvah bands that all tried to reproduce his sounds in the 70's, Herb Alpert & Lani Hall perform humbly, modestly, and with a reserved proficient ability that creates that familiar, oh so familiar sound. Another surprise was the engaging personalities that this 41 year married couple have. This was truly a memorable Cafe Carlyle show. The first thing I did when I got home was type Herb Alpert and Lani Hall into my Pandora search, got out my old albums, and went to sleep in music heaven.
