Cabaret had it's beginnings in Germany, so I guess it was "Bashert" (yiddish - meant to be) that the German and Romanian Ambassadors were among those that filled the Actors Temple last night to hear acclaimed European Cabaret Star Adrienne Haan perform. As Rabbi Jill Hausman pointed out in her opening remarks, "actors have always used their talents to raise money for the historic shul".
Adrieene Haan did just that as she entertained with a diverse repertoire that ranged from chanson to jazz, klezmer and Broadway. It was a night that honored Phyllis Malamud and her father Cantor Louis Malamud who was the "heart" of the temple from 1943 until his death in 1980. Carol Ostrow produced the moving evening and temple president Robert J. Reicher spoke about the rich history of the Actors Temple and the Malamud family. As George Jessel, Irving Berlin, Joey E. Lewis, Sophy Tucker, and all the other prior members looked down, Ms Haan expertly continued the tradition of Actors Temple performances.
