PELIROJA with SPECIAL GUEST DJ BONGOHEAD

Wednesday, October 29 at 7:30PM

$12 Adv / $15 Door

Producer and guitarist Jacob Plasse united some of his oldest friends - players from the Daptones, Pedrito Martinez Group and Los Hacheros - to form Peliroja, a New York collective inspired by the sounds of Ethiopia, Dominican Republic, Cuba and the Congo. Their debut album Injusticia was released on August 19th on Chulo Records. "Some of the musicians in Peliroja and I would meet up after school on Jane Street in the West Village, at a stoop with some Old English, a spliff and a tape deck," says Plasse, "We were gangly, awkward 15 year-olds and not cool by any means. I'm not sure how we became obsessed with obscure 70s funk and Afrobeat music, but that's what we would listen to: The 3 Sounds, Lyn Collins, Africa 70."

Produced and co-written by Plasse, Injusticia's groove is deep, driven by the Daptones' rhythm section - drummer Homer Steinweiss and bassist Nick Movshon - play off the polyrhythms of Carlos Padron's timbales and Jhair Salas' congas, forming a new fusion of old sounds. Jainardo Batista's vocals soar over these rhythms, propelled by Mike Eckroth's mercurial arrangements.

THE EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH with CATIE LAZARUS

Wednesday, October 29 at 9:30PM

$20

Ever wonder what it's like to have a dreamy job? Comedian Catie Lazarus did too, so she created the Employee of the Month show, an utterly addictive, candid, fun talk show about work. The New York Times calls Employee of the Month "beloved" and Black Book calls it "hilarious."

For her October show, Lazarus, who suffers from self-diagnosed Seasonal Affective Disorder, celebrates the people who make paying for cable, Netflix, Hulu, or sharing your HBO Go PW worthwhile. Her guests are actor Alex Borstein (Family Guy, Shameless, HBO's Getting On), producer Anthony Bregman (Eternal Sunshine, Synechdoche), Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Wesley Morris (Grantland, ESPN) and comedians Ilana Glazer & Abbi Jacobson (Broad City). There will also be comedy and music from Shockwave (Freestyle Love Supreme), Eric Biondo (Antibalas), and more surprises.

LARGO: A NIGHT OF SONG FROM THE ICONIC CONCEPT ALBUM

Thursday, October 30 at 7:00PM

$25

Largo is an ambitious work of American music - part blues, part rock, part Celtic, and part classical. Loosely inspired by the works of composer Antonin Dvo?ák, his trip to New York, and his symphony From the New World, the concept album was a brilliant example of storytelling and songwriting, unreeling tales told through the voices of diverse group of Americans. Chertoff, Hyman, Forman and Bazilian collaborated on Largo, calling on an astounding lineup of artists including Taj Mahal, Levon Helm, Carole King, The Chieftains, Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne and more.

This show is the first step in re-envisioning the iconic work for the theater. The night will feature the vocal performances of Margot Bingham, Little Isidore, Mutlu, Jeffrey Gaines, Veronica Forman and Willie Nile. The live band features Hyman and Bazilian with William Wittman, Tommy Williams and Phil Cimino.

For their Joe's Pub debut, Hudson Shad will play hits from the 20s through the 90s, combining their elegant vocal delivery with their signature brand of feather-light humor, originally choreographed by Broadway legend Patricia Birch. In 1992, the NYTimes praised Hudson Shad's "perfect pitch," and in 2014 the LATimes called them "superb."

THE HOT SARDINES

$20

The Hot Sardines make their New York City return with this show, which also marks the international release of their new self-titled album (Decca/Universal Music Classics). Bandleader Evan "Bibs" Palazzo and lead singer Miz Elizabeth combine with the Sardine ensemble of powerhouse musicians - and their very own tap dancer - to play "hot jazz" as it was in the era when live music was king...with a little glamour, a little grit, and a lot of passion. Even while giving voice to the history-defining jazz of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s, the Hot Sardines' vibrant performances bridge generations and captivate 21st century audiences. Forbes Magazine calls them "one of the best jazz bands in NYC today."

The Hot Sardines have a distinctive recipe for making musical magic: take a blustery brass lineup, layer it over a rhythm section led by a stride-piano virtuoso in the Fats Waller vein, and tie it all together with a one-of-the-boys frontwoman who sings in both English and French with a voice from another era. The brainchild of Bibs and Miz Elizabeth, the Sardine sound fuses musical influences from New York, Paris, and New Orleans that were nurtured from the Prohibition era through the Great Depression, WWII and beyond.
