NO EVIL 2.0:  A RESISTANCE CABARET Returns to New York  Image

Last seen at The Duplex a month and a half into the Trump presidency, No Evil: A Cabaret of Resistance, returns in 2018 older and wearier, but still here. This second incarnation of 2017's sold out run remains dedicated to creating musical space for rage and resistance. This diverse trio of eclectic and electric performers, Jerry Phelps, Elliot Roth and Karen Thompson, plumb every genre of American music to galvanize and inspire, despite the daily onslaught of the Trump Administration's lies, greed and hate. Using their unique sound and deep talents to reflect the polarized views of the nation in this particular political moment, No Evil 2.0 allows music to speak where words cannot while making space for healing, survival, and deeply affecting moments of joy.

Singer/pianist/composer/arranger Elliot Roth has appeared in Downbeat Magazine as one of New York's "Top 20 Performers to Watch" and has starred in multiple productions around New York City, including Our Sinatra at the world famous Oak Room (Off Broadway) and Jesus Christ Superstar (title role). He serves double duty in No Evil as the show's Musical Director and one of the show's vocalists. As one of the top five contestants in the inaugural Mama's Next Big Act competition and the veteran of three solo shows, including 2015's Can't Have It All, Jerry Phelps one again showcases his musical prowess. Karen Thompson, former voice of goddess of the MAC Awards, returns to the New York Cabaret stage.

Jerry Phelps Born and raised in Louisiana, Phelps has a unique and dynamic vocal style that clearly reflects the varied, eclectic musical environment of his youth: rhythm and blues, zydeco, and gospel, to name a few. After honing his skills in performance, piano, and voice, and earning Bachelor's and Master's of Music Education degrees, he has become a sought-after classroom and private music educator. Phelps was named a quarter finalist for the GRAMMY© Music Educator Award by the RECORDING ACADEMY© and THE GRAMMY FOUNDATION© out of over 30,000 nominations. In addition, he serves as accompanist, voice teacher, musical director and vocal coach to a variety of organizations and private clients. (www.jerryphelpsmusic.com)

Elliot Roth Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, NYC music artist Roth is a graduate of the prestigious Manhattan School of Music jazz arts program. Off-Broadway credits include Our Sinatra at the world famous Oak Room, Mid Twenties at Manhattan Theater Source, and his sold out performance as 'Jesus' in the concert version of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Living Room. He has appeared in Downbeat Magazine as one of the area's "Top 20 Performers to Watch" and is one of the most versatile pianist/singers in the city. Karen Thompson Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois to Jamaican parents, Thompson, the former voice of goddess for the MAC Awards, returns to the Cabaret stage with No Evil 2.0. Thompson is an alumna of New York City's Lavender Light: The Black and People of All Colors Lesbian and Gay Gospel Choir and 90s era performances at Women's One World cafe. By day, Thompson is a senior staff attorney at the Innocence Project where she litigates post-conviction wrongful conviction cases across the United States and is an associate professor of law at Cardozo School of Law where she teaches through the Innocence Project clinic.

Brian Fishler (DRUMS) Fishler has earned himself the distinction of being a dynamic, steady, and dependable drummer on the NYC music scene. Since relocating to New York from California in 2005, Fishler has acquired a comprehensive and versatile collection of musical credits and experiences, from jazz to rock.

JEFF JEUDY (GUITAR) Jeudy's love of music jumps all over the radio dial. Hip hop, R&B, rock, indie, singer/songwriter, and funk: he's musically fearless. Jeff attended the School of Performing Arts (immortalized in "Fame") as a fine arts major and later spent three years in Los Angeles, where he put in time at BMG Music and co-wrote the track "Baby's Song" featured in the 2007 independent film Traci Townsend. Since 2009, Jeudy has served as the Musical Director of the sketch comedy group AMERICAN CANDY.

AMANDA RUZZA (BASS) Ruzza hails from São Paulo, Brazil. She discovered her muse at an early age - perhaps the result of her Chilean mother who loved opera, and her father, Italian, whose passion was rock n' roll. She has worked with distinguished Brazilian producers and arrangers, including Grammy Award-winner Moogie Canazio, Maestro Jobam and Sony Music Japan's Osny Mello. Besides being a musician fluent in an array of styles, Ruzza is fluent in several languages as well - Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and English. In developing her musical skills, she is able to cross all cultural boundaries. Her work with groups covering a wide range of styles, including Amy Lee of the rock band Evanescence, Jill Sobule, Leni Stern, Fred Ho's Eco-Music Big Band, Dave Eggar, as well as with her own band, the Amanda Ruzza Group. Amanda draws on her multicultural background as a primary influence on her passion for composing music - music that seamlessly assimilates elements of funk, rock, jazz and South American rhythms. Ms. Ruzza earned a dual degree in Jazz Bass Performance and Liberal Arts at The New School in New York City. As a session musician on electric bass, she has contributed on recordings with Bebel Gilberto, Jason Miles, Amy Lee, Dave Eggar and Arturo O'Farrill. In addition to her performance career, Ruzza has recently produced and arranged Phantom Fish, the first release of Latin jazz phenomenon saxophonist Sérgio Galvão garnering critical acclaim and airplay in both the US and Latin America.
