Marilyn Maye doesn't want the celebration of Johnny Mercer's centenary to end. That's why she's following up her mega-hit Mercer show from June with more Mercer, including songs she didn't perform in June. "Marilyn Maye presents More Mercer" opens at the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, on Tuesday October 6 at 7pm. The exclusive 11-show engagement (Maye's ninth since her Metropolitan Room debut in late 2006) runs through October 17.
In June Marilyn Maye presented "Mercer the Maye Way" for nine triumphant performances. Stephen Holden of The New York Times wrote, "As Marilyn Maye threaded her way from the stage through a packed house of cheering admirersI overheard comparisons to Judy Garland's 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall." Rex Reed, writing in the New York Observer, said "'Mercer the Maye Way" is not to be missed. (...) It's a master class in singing conducted by a polished pro who majored in ‘unforgettable.'"A Kansas City native and resident, Maye was nominated for a best new artist Grammy in 1965. As an RCA recording artist she had seven albums and 34 singles, introducing numerous hits including "Cabaret," "Step to the Rear," "Sherry," "Too Late Now," and "If My Friends Could See Me Now." "Too Late Now" was picked by The Smithsonian as one of the 100 best recordings of the 20th century.
Johnny Carson called her "one of the best singers in the business, outstanding, a super singer!" She appeared a total of 76 times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (the most by a singer), both in New York and Burbank.
