Marilyn Maye Returns to Art House with Billy Stritch, 8/7-8

Dubbed "The greatest white female singer in the world" by none other than Ella Fitzgerald, star vocalist Marilyn Maye took Provincetown audiences by storm in her long anticipated debut at The Art House last season. She returns to The Art House by popular demand this summer on August 7th and 8th at 7:00 PM featuring Billy Stritch on the piano.

Grammy-nominated Marilyn Maye has performed on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson more than any other singer at 76 appearances, was named an Official Jazz Legend by the American Jazz Museum, and even had her recording of Lerner and Lowe's "Too Late Now" enshrined as one of The Smithsonian's Best Performers of the Best Compositions of the 20th Century. In October, 2011 the University of Missouri/Kansas City awarded her the "Lifetime Achievement Award." In September 2012 she will be presented the "Kansas Citian of the Year" Award by the Greater Kansas City Sons & Daughters Association. She is the winner of the coveted Jazz Heritage Award, the 2008 and 2009 Nightlife Critics Award, the BackStage Bistro "Lifetime Achievement Award," and the MAC "Celebrity of the Year" award for the fourth year in a row: 2009, 2010, 2011, and again this year in 2012. In New York, after three shows at famed Town Hall this past year, she returns for a two-week run at to Feinsteins in November.

Billy Stritch is the pianist/music supervisor for Liza Minnelli and appeared on Broadway in Liza's at the Palace! He is also a singer and has performed all over the United States and internationally in such famed venues as Rainbow and Stars, The Russian Tea Room, and The Royal Albert Hall in London. He also appeared with Chita Rivera and Tommy Tune in a tribute to Jule Styne at the Palladium in London. Television appearances include Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall, The Today Show, The Charlie Rose Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Stritch served as musical supervisor and vocal arranger for Liza Live from Radio City Music Hall, and writes arrangements for Liza Minnelli and Charles Aznavour's joint concert appearances worldwide. He acted as associate producer, pianist and arranger for Minnelli's Gently, which earned two Grammy nominations.

As a result of coming to the attention of Steve Allen, who invited her to appear on his show, Marilyn Maye signed a recording contract with RCA leading to a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist of 1965. In addition to her record-setting Tonight Show appearances, other television appearances include Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, Dick Cavett, Hollywood Palace, and many others. Throughout her career, she has worked with many of the music industry's top arrangers, including Peter Matz who arranged and conducted her Smithsonian-honored album "The Lamp is Low," as well as with the renowned Don Costa, Manny Album and Don Sebelsky.

After a performance for The Mabel Mercer Society at Lincoln Center's Rose Hall in 2006, Maye was "rediscovered" and has enjoyed a major career resurgence, now known as the 'Cabaret Queen.' She has since performed twice with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, with Michael Feinstein at Zankel Hall, with Doc Severinson and the Phoenix Symphony, at Catalina's Jazz Club in Hollywood, the Rrazz Room in San Francisco, and many other notable venues. For The Art House, she will perform jazz and pop standards from the American Songbook composers such as Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman as well as songs from her RCA recordings. The Art House is honored to welcome this legendary vocalist back to Provincetown on August 7th and 8th. As Rex Reed recently wrote in The New York Observer, "Her show is not to be missed. It's a master class in singing conducted by a polished pro who majored in unforgettable."
