In his first major Manhattan appearance since his heralded debut at "Broadway's supper club," 54 Below, in July, acclaimed NYC jazz vocalist-songwriter MARCUS GOLDHABER returns to encore his new show, "FREE & EASY: LIVIN' ON SWING STREET," at internationally acclaimed jazz cabaret THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, TONIGHT, SEPTEMBER 26 at 7:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, "MOSTLY MARCUS," Goldhaber's much-buzzed-about "jazz duo" summer residency at Bar Thalia at Symphony Space, has been extended into the fall, with performances Sunday, Sept. and Sunday, Sept. 27. Two shows each evening at 7:00 and 8:30 p.m.
At the Metropolitan Room, Goldhaber will be joined again by special guest vocalist Melissa Stylianou, with musical accompaniment from Don Rebic on piano; Paul Gill on bass, Marcello Pellitteri on drums, and Evan Schwam on saxaphone/flute
Hangin' his hat at the Metropolitan Room for an evening, Marcus Goldhaber takes a stroll through a captivating collection of re-imagined jazz standards and new originals that People Magazine says "will have you giddy one moment, melancholy the next and loving every note."
Picture a street lamp dimly lit...an empty block during the smallest hours of post-evening mist...an endless cycle of songs groovin' along and half a moon to help guide the way...that's Swing Street,"home" to the imaginary houses of Sinatra, Chet Baker, Sara Vaughan and other "neighbors" who represent Marcus' greatest influences.
"It's a little walk through a musical fantasy neighborhood," says Goldhaber, "highlighting some of the greatest influences I grew up with and still live with."
Goldhaber takes the audience on a personal walking tour of musical influence with "FREE & EASY: LIVIN' ON SWING STREET." We hear about the grandfather with whom he always sang a duet before saying "hello," a mother whose piano playing was siren song during homework, and lessons learned from Sarah Vaughan, Harry Connick Jr., Gerry Mulligan, and Chet Baker.
Reviewing Goldhaber's"SWING STREET" world premiere at 54 Below, New York Lifestyles Magazine said: "His easy voice and connection to the audience is reminiscent of an early Frank Sinatra. Sinatra lost his golden voice early on but kept his fans because he was the consummate entertainer. Goldhaber still has an excellent voice and has learned how to double up by entertaining as well. He intersperses his medley with quips and jokes as he goes along."
Noting Goldhaber's "throwaway charm," Broadway World added: "The vocalist is unhurried, mindful of lyrics, and elegantly restrained. He seems comfortable on stage and refreshingly sincere.
"MOSTLY MARCUS" is designed to underscore Goldhaber's intimate approach to the American Songbook, which Jazz Weekly has called "lyrical and swingin'." and All About Jazz says is delivered "like a plate full of comfort food!" As Jonathan Schwartz (WNYC) says, "he is filled with ideas!"
