The Great American Play Series and The Nuyorican Poets Café present Norman Mailer's classic play- The Deer Park (or ‘Hollywood Goes to Hell')
In March of 2007 Norman Mailer invited actor/director Stephan Morrow to co-direct a film of ‘The Deer Park' with him after attending a staged reading of the play Mr. Morrow had directed and performed in. With Mailer's sad passing that project never came to fruition and we are now presenting the play as a tribute to one of our greatest writer's legacy.
It will be the final production to have Norman Mailer's personal imprint.
The Deer Park uses Hollywood of the 1950's as the metaphor for Purgatory, investigating all the big issues: obsessive love, blind ambition, greed, lust for power and lust in general, integrity and lack of it, the price of guilt and mortality.
And with astonishing prophetic power, Norman Mailer frames the play with the Nevada Atomic tests of the time.
Brandishing the kind of spicy dialogue only Norman Mailer could produce and laced with the blackest of humor, it makes for an evening of theater that is gripping and provocative in the tradition of the great classic plays.
There will be a post play discussion after each performancE. Norris Church Mailer is scheduled to attend on June 15, Patricia Bosworth (author of ‘Brando' and ‘Monty') on June 21 and others to be announced.
