Mackenzie Shivers, known for her whimsical compositions paired with raw emotion and nostalgic ambience, announces a four part collaborative residency at Rockwood Music Hall this summer and fall. Paired with Shivers' musical muses and friends, the residency, spanning from July through October, will welcome Broadway singer and songwriter Pearl Rhein, July 31, Canadian bassist and composer Marika Galea, August 28, frequent collaborator and indie-rocker Lance Breakfast, September 25, and steelpan player and vocalist Nikkiesha McLeod, October 30.
Mackenzie Shivers kicks off her 'Get the Shivers' Rockwood residency with special guest Pearl Rhein on July 31. While both women often sing their original songs from behind the piano, their collaboration will also include original songs incorporating the accordion, fiddle, and bodrhán on some of their favorite Irish traditional. As summer comes to a close, Canadian bassist and composer Marika Galea co-bills at the August 28 second installment. While Shivers and Galea are both classically trained, their genre-bending music is underpinned with diverse composition styles, namely folk and jazz, centered around the art of storytelling. In late September, Lance Breakfast and Shivers will offer audiences some Laurel Canyon worthy folk harmonies while jamming out to Breakfast's intelligent spin on garage band rock, giving Shivers the opportunity to let loose on the keys. Both share music from their latest projects in a collaborative evening of unique folk music that stems from the heart and soul. The series closes on the eve of Halloween to celebrate the release of Nikkiesha McLeod's debut EP Quarrel, co-produced with Shivers. A bold tribute to McLeod's late brother and mother, the evening will center around their collaborative project and the unique sounds of the steel pan, paying homage to Mcleod's birthplace of Trinidad.
"In a city of over 8 million people, the amount of talent that lives among us is overwhelming." explains Shivers. "These co-bills are made up of songwriters I love and admire as people and as musicians. They each bring something different to the table, all make me want to sing along, and often make me think 'I wish I'd written that!' While we all have different backgrounds and styles, I want to explore the ties that connect our music together, because I think we have more in common than meets the eye."
