The Last Call Series at Trustus has brought the highly popular Plan 9 From Outer Space to the Thigpen Main Stage in 2012. Now it wraps up its season with Kevin Bush's creative cabaret evening Off the Top of My Head this summer. Bush will bring special guests Terrance Henderson, Vicky Saye Henderson, Jason Stokes, and his popular rocking brother Eddie Bush. The show will kick off tonight, June 21, and will be performed one last time on July 12th. Doors open at 10:45pm following the evening performance of Ain't Misbehavin', and the show begins at 11:15pm. Tickets are $15.00 and are sold at the door.

Kevin Bush says of his show: "I've always considered myself a singer first, then an actor (although my confidence has increased over the years on the acting side), so throughout my theatre "career" I've been drawn to musicals. As much as I love performing in plays, however, it's been a longtime dream of mine to perform in a "cabaret" setting, where the essence of what we do as singing actors - making an audience feel and understand through music - is brought to a beautifully intimate level. I knew this was something I truly had in my heart to do after performing in the show "tick...tick...BOOM!" at Trustus, which, in spite of the fact that I was performing someone else's story, felt the closest I'd gotten at that point to having that kind of close connection to an audience through song."

"Aside from love for acting through song, I'm a huge music geek, and am always on the hunt for music that inspires me -- whether it's through a brilliant piece of lyrical truth-telling or a melody that hits you at spine level. And for as long as I can remember, I've been collecting songs, physically and mentally, that hit the criteria. I see this show as a sort of "mix tape" that's intended to share the brilliance of these songs, and their songwriters, with an audience."

"The collection of material for this show came as I started culling through my list of these 'inspirational' songs. Like most people, I've been touched on a personal level by a vast library of songs, each for different reasons. As I started going through possibilities for this show, I found myself being drawn to songs that had to do with "truth" and, specifically, not being afraid to speak, or sing, your truth. At the same time, I wanted to honor songwriters who are my heroes in laying it on the line in their songs, whose fearlessness in their music inspires me. In the end, I've put together a mix of songs that I hope will move the audience in the same way I've been moved, and give them the spark to get in touch with their own truth."

"The mix of music for the show pulls heavily from popular music from the 60s on, sort of the "Great American Songbook, Volume 2." I'll be doing songs by Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Freddie Mercury and Queen, Ben Folds, Stephen Sondheim and a few others. For at least one of the shows (looks like July 12th only), I'll also be performing with my brother Eddie, whose music has literally inspired me my entire life, doing a song called 'We Shared Time,' which he wrote in honor of our younger brother Alex."

When Larry Hembree and Dewey Scott-Wiley gave me opportunity to put this performance together about a year ago, I immediately knew I wanted to share the experience with some my best friends, so I invited along Jason Stoke, Terrance Henderson and Vicky Saye-Henderson, all of whom I've been honored to share the stage with before. With each of them, I not only wanted to bring out their great voices, but also honor them for their individual fearlessness in pursuing their art."

Off the Top of My Head will delight audiences tonight, June 21st and return one more time on July 12th, 2013. Tickets are $15.00 general admission sold at the door. Doors for this unique evening are at 10:45pm after the evening performances of Ain't Misbehavin'. The show starts at 11:15pm both nights.
