Celebrated performer, comedian and writer Justin Sayre returns to New York City later this month with his new solo show, JUSTIN SAYRE MAKES THE CASE FOR AMERICA, a live, 'Love-In' filled with music, comedy and storytelling, on September 29 & 30 at Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette Street) inside NYC's famed The Public Theater.
Inspired be the 'Be-In' movement of the 1960s, JUSTIN SAYRE MAKES THE CASE FOR AMERICA-which he lovingly dubs as a 'Love-In'-is Sayre's hilarious and heartfelt response to perhaps the most pressing question of our time: What does it mean to be an American at this moment and how do we move forward? Through his one-of-a-kind mix of comedy and pathos, Sayre invites us into his 'apartment' for an intimate evening of stories, songs, comedy and, if all goes well, even a little bit of fried chicken.

Sayre has been described by legendary columnist Michael Musto as "Oscar Wilde meets Whoopi Goldberg" (Village Voice) and as one of the "Funniest People in Brooklyn" by Brooklyn Magazine. He also made Frontiers Magazine's list of "LA's Most Talented LBGT Comic." His many accolades include the Bistro Award for 'Comedy Artistry' and a MAC Award nomination for 'Best Male Comedy Performance'. His solo shows have been hailed as "rambunctious, uproarious and unpredictable" (The Wall Street Journal), "delicious and delightfully droll" (New York Post), and "hilarious and sardonic" (Village Voice).
For television, Sayre spent 3 seasons as a staff writer on CBS's hit comedy "2 Broke Girls" created by Michael Patrick King, who hired Sayre on the spot after attending one of his cabaret performances. Sayre also had a memorable guest role on HBO's Emmy® nominated "The Comeback" opposite Lisa Kudrow.
As a performer, Sayre is perhaps best known for his downtown cabaret/variety act, The Meeting, which played for eight consecutive seasons in New York City, produced by Dan Fortune and Adam Rosen. The monthly show served as a tribute to an artist or cultural work-think Diana Ross, Dolly Parton and George Michael-iconic to the gay community, laced with Sayre's signature blend of outrageous comedy, politics, culture and everything in between. Guest stars of The Meeting over the years include Lea DeLaria, Tonya Pinkins, Bridget Everett, and Tituss Burgess, to name a few. The Meeting has been named one of NYC's 'Top Nightclub Shows' by Time Out New York.
His other ongoing live variety show, The GAYBC's: A Brief History of Gay Culture, is Sayre's alphabetical exploration of icons and aspects of gay culture, conceived it as a multipart ongoing series with each installment inspired by a letter of the alphabet. In response to the show's enormous success, it will soon be turned into a book by Chronicle Books.
As a playwright and performer, his works for the theatre include: Love's Refrain (La MaMa), The Boy Sonata (Dixon Place; The Wild Project), The Rite of Water: A Life of Hart Crane (The Pop-UP Museum of Queer History), Justin Sayre Is Alive and Well...Writing (Ars Nova), The Lamentable Tale of the Dog (Highline Park), and The Click of the Lock (The Players Club).
Sayre is also the author of the YA novels, Husky and Pretty, two in a trilogy of books published by Penguin/Random House. The third book in the trilogy releases in 2019.
A true jack of all trades, he also has a popular podcast on iTunes called 'Sparke and Circulate'; and his benefit concert, Night of a Thousand Judys, is in its 7th year of raising money for the Ali Forney Center for Homeless LGBT Youth.
