MARTHA REDBONE: BONE HILL (PART OF NEW YORK VOICES)

In this concert, Martha Redbone will present songs from her new show Bone Hill, her New York Voices commission. With an all-star band in tow, Redbone's newest piece was created in collaboration with Aaron Whitby and Roberta Uno. In this new piece, the blues and soul singer explores her Appalachian mining family's heritage and history in an epic that spans generations and a breadth of music genres. This breathtaking work-in-progress is not to be missed as a great American story that has remained untold until now.
Joe's Pub's New York Voices program commissions and presents new works from critically-acclaimed performers, supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. With New York Voices, Joe's Pub provides greater support for artists, allowing them the space and time to create new work that not only connects them to their fans, but to their contemporaries. Prior New York Voices commissions include Bridget Everett's Rock Bottom and Ethan Lipton's No Place to Go.

XAVIER and his musical guests will help you get turned on a little early with their salute to soul music's leading ladies. Now in its fourth year, his guests this time will be Bright Light Bright Light, Del Marquis of Scissor Sisters, Cassondra James Kellam (Alicia Keys), Joe's Pub Artist-in-Residence Bridget Barkan, Big Dipper and a few surprises. Past guests have included Lena Hall, Stephin Merritt, Joan As Policewoman, Sxip Shirey, Lady Rizo and Rachael Price (Lake Street Dive). David Nagler is musical director.
Xavier has received from the best in the business, including D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, Devo, Anita Baker, Lena Horne, TV on the Radio, The Rapture, and Ashford & Simpson. He's also a Diesel U Music Award nominee and his UK debut on Virgin Records earned him a top ten hit. The Boys Choir of Harlem alum has collaborated on recordings with Scissor Sisters, New Power Generation, Basement Jaxx vocalists Vula & Sharlene, Diane Birch, Bright Light Bright Light, Stephin Merritt, Sxip Shirey, and LL Cool J. He is a member of Nova Social and also writes and performs regularly with Slow Knights.

Jeff Franzel is an accomplished songwriter and jazz pianist who has accompanied artists such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Mel Torme. He has also written hit songs for Josh Groban, Placido Domingo, Temptations, 'Nsync, Dianne Reeves (When You Know), Shawn Colvin (Never Saw Blue Like That, When You Know) and Taylor Dayne (Don't Rush Me). Franzel is a Yamaha artist and recently recorded a solo piano album at Oscar Peterson Hall in Montreal. He performs improvisation in addition to jazz and pop standards. Franzel is currently arranging and playing piano for a Billy Joel Country Tribute album featuring major country artists singing the legendary artist's hit songs.

Due to popular demand and its recent sold-out, extended run, Bridget Everett returns for a limited engagement of her hit show Rock Bottom, a chardonnay-soaked journey through the highs and lows of her life. Originally commissioned as part of the Joe's Pub 2013 New York Voices series, Rock Bottom opened to critical acclaim in September 2014, and ran through October 16. The ferociously talented Everett wrote Rock Bottom with Tony Award-winning songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz and Matt Ray contributed music as well. Everett shares intensely personal moments next to wildly hilarious ones, baring her heart and much more to her audiences. The show features new original songs, plus favorites from Everett's monthly sold-out show with her band, the Tender Moments. New York Voices is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

After years of living abroad, Razia Said returned to Madagascar in 2007 to discover her country's landscape ravaged by illegal logging, slash-and-burn agriculture and the impact of climate change. That trip inspired her first album, the critically-acclaimed Zebu Nation (Cumbancha Discovery, 2010). Akory address Razia's life experiences as well as Madagascar's struggles to cope with an ever-deteriorating political situation, the destruction of the country's bio-diverse forests and the daily challenges faced by its inhabitants. Akory, which means "What Now?" in the Malagasy language, was produced on four continents over the last four years and sees Razia diving even more deeply into her Malagasy roots. Featuring a more stripped-down approach than her debut album, Akory is full of upbeat songs with vibrant melodies and soulful collaborations with a number of Madagascar's top musicians.
Razia's band for this special evening is David Rajaonary on guitar, A.T.N. Stadwijk on accordion and keys, Samuel Torres on percussions, Mamadu Mba on bass and Harvey Wirht on drums.
