Isabel Rose

Thursday, October 21 at 9:30 PM'; $25

" As long as [Rose] is on stage, nobody would leave the room," writes The International Herald Tribune. "Rose gives the audience one grand good time," agrees New York Theater Wire. Dave Kehr of the New York Times has proclaimed, "Ms. Rose can indeed sing."

Join Anything But Love film star and J.A.P Chronicles author Isabel Rose as she celebrates the release of her debut CD, Swingin' from the Hip, produced by legendary Joe's Pub regular, Julian Fleisher. With a repertoire that draws from standards, pop and jazz alike, Rose brings her own hip style to everything she sings. At turns sassy and brassy, often sultry and sophisticated, and always with an irrepressible energy and wit, Rose delivers a sound that'll keep you smiling. Described by one fan as "a contemporary Peggy Lee with a smattering of Ann Margaret, a pinch of Dusty Springfield and healthy nod toward Bette Midler," Rose creates something entirely original and timeless that has broad audience appeal.

THE WIYOS

Friday, October 22 at 7:00 PM; $15

Formed in New York City during the summer of 2002, The Wiyos took their name from the toughest gang to prowl the streets of old New York (The Why'os, circa 1890). They have spent eight years touring extensively in the USA, Canada, France, The Netherlands and The United Kingdom. They were featured in the BBC television documentary, "Folk America - Hollerers, Stompers and Old-Time Ramblers". In 2009 The Wiyos were hand picked by Bob Dylan to tour for seven weeks as the opener of the Bob Dylan Show, with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp. Their 2009 release, BroKen Land Bell, sat in the top 20 of the AMA charts for 14 weeks. The Wiyos unique charisma transcends typical social boundaries. They appeal to everyone from young hipsters to seasoned music connoisseurs. They have emerged as a hallmark band in the resurgence of traditional American music over the past decade.

"...like Dylan they [The Wiyos] display a knack from hammering archaic musical traditions into new directions... the result sounds like a synthesis with a genuine future, something of a rare accomplishment." -Americana UK

"The group brings exuberance and intensity to these vintage styles, and its performances are layered with vaudevillian stage antics" -The New Yorker

"fabulous" - Bob Harris, BBC radio

"The Wiyos are a gem.... talented enough to deserve their iconic fedoras, and rough-and -tumble enough to deserve the name they share with one of NYC's most notorious street gangs." -Metroland, NY

"fabulously skilled and inspired kooks." -LA Times

The Wiyos original compositions feel timeless. Much of their music is inspired by the early American musical idioms of the 1920s and '30s, but the band has a reputation for gleefully subverting genre distinctions. They seamlessly fuse vintage sounds with the contemporary without sounding forced or affected. Their more recent explorations blend human beat-box with classic swing and New Orleans style rhythms. The Wiyos' live performances are riveting affairs that take audiences back to an era before TV and mass-media were the main sources of entertainment. With infectious exuberance and theatrical skill, they create a visual spectacle in the tradition of vaudeville-esque performers. Their on-stage physical comedy recalls the silent films of Laurel & Hardy, Keaton and Chaplin. Their instrumental prowess blends numerous instruments into what is truly their own sound.

Lady Rizo: unescorted

Fridays, October 22, November 19 at 9:30 PM

"The brazen blonde belts out classics and pop tunes atop a piano" -- Women's Wear Daily

"Caburlesque artist Lady Rizo has, thankfully, upped the ante... throwing in enough hyperfemininity to blow your heart and go down on your mind." - Sharyn Jackson, Village Voice

"Lady Rizo and The Assettes brought down the house."- Men's Vogue

"Rizo's mischievous grin and banter hold the audience captive." - NY Press

"adorably louche"-- Time Out

"Lady Rizo bring(s) out the Broadway in this chart-topper" --Rolling Stone

The incomparable "cabaret star" (NY Magazine) Lady Rizo is back for an unchaperoned evening of song and decadence. You may have seen her here at Joe's Pub with her "glam bottom baring dance troupe the Assettes " (Village Voice), celebrating the billboard top ten in the monthly series Our Hit Parade, or midtown at the gothic Night Hotel co-hosting the weekly transnational lounge Foreign Affairs.

But here is your chance to have her all to yourself. Her seamless mix of bawdy humor and elegance has been likened to Mae West but it's her vocal chops that have garnered recent attention: collaborating with both Yo-Yo Ma & Moby on albums this year, singing selections of the American Songbook in front of the internationally acclaimed 36 -piece orchestra The Knights, and at MOMA for a sold out cabaret for the Kirchner Exhibit.

Let her lashes beguile you as she interprets an irresistible mix of popular songs from all eras backed by some of the finest musicians in New York City. Even though she is venturing out solo, if you know Lady Rizo you won't be surprised if a couple special guests pop up. $15 in advance / $20 at the door

PIERCE TURNER

Saturday, October 23 at 7:30 PM; $23

"Easily one of Ireland's most important rock artists of the last twenty years" - Tony Clayton-lea, The Irish Times

Whether as a singer or songwriter or performer, Pierce Turner has a penchant for the unexpected and the unorthodox, re-writing the rules for all three endeavours. Sometimes he performs from behind his trusty keyboard backed by a solo instrument (sax, maybe, or violin or trombone!). Or he can be out front- of-house clambering over tables and ordering drinks from the bar. In the middle of a song!

His albums to are equally mercurial, showing influences ranging from his Catholic Irish upbringing to the decadence of Lou Reed's New York, merging the upfront rock of The Byrds, The Beach Boys and The Who to deft touches of Irish trad, folk, jazz, techno, classical and choral harmonies.

GONZALO GRAU Y LA CLAVE SECRETA

Saturday, October 23 at 9:30 PM; $14

Since its inception, 2009 Grammy Nominee, Gonzalo Grau y La Clave Secreta have been at the forefront of Latin music, thinking outside the "music box" and beyond the prescribed formulas of the mainstream market. La Clave Secreta is not just salsa and certainly not just timba but a whole lot more. It is a mix of cultures and flavors with a message for serious listeners and rabid dancers alike.

BEN RATLIFF from the NY times says:

"Mr. Grau's band doesn't play classicized salsa and timba. It plays the real thing, but with a heightened sense of composition.

In one sense he's picking up the thread of the ambitious composers of salsa from the 1970s. He's keeping intact the jazz horn arrangements, Cuban tumbao bass lines and vocal choruses and improvising. In another sense he's trying to modernize and globalize. He infuses his work with specific rhythmic traditions and song forms, including Cuban danzón and Spanish flamenco ..."

BOB YOUNG from the Boston Herald says:

"... pouring funk, hip-hop, Cuban rumba and South American folk into the timba cauldron, creating some of the hottest Latin dance music in town.

PETER WATROUS from Descarga.com says:

"The music opens up into new rooms over and over again, new colors and textures, wanders into timba breaks, piano montunos, spoken works pieces, driving horn lines. Glorious, this stuff. Highly Recommended."

FIRST AID KIT & THE LOOM

Sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg offer up enchanting folk songs and toe-tapping good times from their debut album on Wichita Recordings, The Big Black & The Blue. Uncut Magazine says of the duo, "They have bell-clear voices, and a spooky ability to evince naivety and world-weariness in the same breath." There will be some laughs, and maybe some tears, during their show. Opening the evening is Brooklyn upstarts, The Loom. They'll light a fire in your belly with some ruckus Americana sounds.
