JUNE 5 - JUNE 9

SHARRon Matthews

Saturday and Sunday, June 5 at 7:00 PM & June 6 at 9:30 PM

"No demure wallflower, Matthews is out there and in your face. She can rivet you with her great pipes and then touch you with the tenderness of her interpretations. And then make you laugh until you pee." - Now Magazine

One part comedian, one part chanteuse, wholly entertaining, Canada's "Downtown Diva" of cabaret serves up her own unique brand of uproarious entertainment. In 2009 Sharron was named "Best Cabaret Performer" in Toronto. Sharron sings brilliant re-imaginings of tunes like ‘Creep', ‘Diamonds are Forever', and ‘Slave 4 U'. Through these songs and her own stories, she takes you along on her hilarious and shocking "Almost Famous" journey. $20

DanceNOW [NYC] presents: ONE MAN SHOW

Thursday, June 3 & Friday, June 4 at 7:00 PM, Saturday, June 5 at 9:30 PM

One-Man Show is an hour-long musical starring John Heginbotham.

John Heginbotham wakes from his coma to find his dying wish granted. For the remaining hour of his life, he will star in his own one-man show. His doctor stresses that to survive even for the hour, John must move his arms and legs "vigorously and rhythmically" and use his larynx to provide sonic vibration therapy. He's dancing and singing for his life! Unfortunately, his abilities as a dancing/singing artist are limited. His two caregiver/back-up performers carry the slack, and his frontal lobe/keyboardist plays a mean stride piano.

The cast of the show now includes Aaron Mattocks, Elizabeth DeMent and David Neumann. Work began on One-Man Show in the Spring of 2009. Chief inspirations include Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, The Wooster Group, the films of Mark Rappaport and HAl Hartley, and Elaine Stritch. $15 in advance / $20 at the door

FEDERICO AUBELE

Saturday, June 5 at 11:30 PM

"Brings Nostalgia plus a warm Spanish guitar to his cool electronica" -- LA TIMES

"The ultimate latin lounge record of the Year" --- NEW YORK POST

"An album that translates the music of the Americas for a modern generation" ---NEW TIMES

Federico Aubele's longings for Buenos Aires and South America as a whole, set the tone for his latest album, "Panamericana," released by ESL Music in September 2007. He notes that although each country has its own, sometimes brutal, history, The Americas possess a unique concoction of people: indigenous populations, former slaves, and constant waves of immigrants from every part of the world. On "Panamericana," one hears guitars, the bandoneon, and horns that play out Latin rhythms. There are tango influences, a touch of bolero, reggae/dub bass lines, hip-hop beats, and electronic sounds . Through it all, "Panamericana" is about memories and a longing for more familiar confines. Aubele says, "Life takes a different shape when you are living abroad. Your relationship becomes your country, your memories weigh on you in different and unpredictable ways, you long for moments that are frozen in time and can't be recaptured, it's all very strange. Then when your relationship ends you realize, ‘What am I doing here?' I just want to go back home." $18

JESSE WINCHESTER

Sunday, June 6 at 7:00 PM

Jesse Winchester was the music world's most prominent Vietnam War draft-evader, though his renown came from a body of wry, closely observed songs. After growing up in Memphis, Winchester received his draft notice in 1967 and moved to Montreal, Canada, rather than serve in the military. In 1969, he met Robbie Robertson of the Band, who helped launch his recording career. In the same way that James Taylor's history of mental instability and drug abuse served as a subtext for his early music, Winchester's exile lent real-life poignancy to songs like "Yankee Lady," which appeared on his debut album, Jesse Winchester (1970). In 1999, Winchester returned from a long recording hiatus with the new album Gentleman of Leisure produced by Jerry Douglas.

Jesse recently returned to the spotlight after an acclaimed performance on Elvis Costello's show Spectacle. $20 in advance, $25 at the door

KAISER CARTEL: CD RELEASE

Tuesday, June 8 at 7:00 PM

"With Miss Kaiser's gorgeous, woozy voice and Mr. Cartel's inventive musicianship (a multitasker, he often plays drums and xylophone at the same time) the band found a loyal audience in New York. A full-length album, "March Forth" followed in June 2008, and subsequent tours across the country helped expand their New York fan club into a national following." - -Andrew Leahey, The Washington Times

Kaiser Cartel is a low-fi, song-driven, harmony-heavy Brooklyn-based duo. Their first full-length album, March Forth, produced by Matt Hales (aka aqualung) and mixed by Matt & Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros) was released in the US on bluhammock music in June 2008 and in the UK on Continental Record Services in June 2009. Courtney Kaiser and Benjamin Cartel have been touring the country in their Prius ever since they quit their teaching jobs last June, stopping at Monolith Festival, 80-35 Festival, headlining their own shows, and supporting Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, aqualung and Carrie Rodriguez. KC have had their music on the TV shows Exiled (MTV), Alter-Eco (Discovery), Private Practice (ABC), the first two episodes of Bored To Death (HBO) and on Starbucks' Have You Heard? Compilation. Their video for "Oh No" can be seen on VH1.com, their video for "Okay" was screened at Slamdance and the "Blue Sky" video won "Best Music Video" at the Coney Island Film Fest. Their charming and intimate live show is not to be missed. The duo recently released an ep, Rock Island, recorded at Daytrotter. Their forthcoming new album, Secret Transit will be released via their own label - Daniel Records on June 8th (US & Canada). $15

STATELESS: A HIP-HOP VAUDEVILLE
Tuesday, June 8 at 9:30 PM
" ... a buoyant, high-energy and curiously magnetic ride." - Robert Hurwitt, SF Chronicle
"Vaudeville and hip hop may appear to be separated by form, style, and about 80 years, but Dan Wolf discovered the intersection. In fact, one could claim he IS the intersection." - 7x7.com

Stateless: a hip hop vaudeville is a collage of live music, hip-hop performance, vaudeville shtick, video projection, magic tricks, history and re-mixed folk songs starring Felonious members Dan Wolf, Tommy Shepherd and Keith Pinto and Brooklyn's One Ring Zero (Michael Hearst and Joshua Camp).

Dan Wolf and Tommy Shepherd are a duo known for their blend of beats, raps, magic tricks and schticks. While on an international tour Dan discovers his direct connection to a famous German-Jewish vaudeville troupe from the 1920's, the Gebrueder Wolf (Brothers Wolf). This discovery opens the wounds of time and lineage, giving Tommy pause to reflect on his roots and culture. $15

Toby Lightman w/ special guest ASLYN

Wednesday, June 9 at 9:30 PM

"Lightman's dusky vocals and earthy, groovy vibe invite comparisons to Joan Osborne and Sheryl Crow" -USA Today

"no small talent... Toby Lightman continues to shine a light on her knack for making rich, soulful pop" -People

Toby Lightman's new independently released album, "Let Go" follows her two Atlantic Records releases, 2004's "Little Things" and 2006's "Bird On A Wire".

She's toured the country extensively, having appeared with such artists as Rob Thomas, Jewel, James Blunt, Gavin DeGraw, and on one memorable evening, Prince. Toby's national TV performances include the Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, NBC's Today Show, and CBS'

Second Cup, among many others. Toby can currently be seen every week singing the opening theme song for NASCAR on Fox broadcasts and her title track "Let Go" can be heard during the extensive Home Shopping Network TV/Radio campaign. She recently appeared on the HSN network becoming their first featured independent artist.

There's a shocking intimacy to singer-songwriter Aslyn's debut album, Lemon Love. That's not to say that it's full of titillating sexual imagery or blistering diatribes. Listening to the album, which was produced by Guy Chambers (Robbie Williams, Jewel) and Eric Valentine (SmashMouth, Third Eye Blind, Queens of the Stone Age), you get the sense that you've stumbled across a trunk full of a stranger's letters and that at any moment you'll be discovered reading them. They reveal the stories behind breakups and betrayals, yet they are buoyant, intoxicated by life and love. They are pure Aslyn. $17
