PASCAL PARISOT / BAD REPUTATION: PIERRE DE GAILLANDE SINGS GEORGE BRASSENS

Sunday, February 28 at 9:30 PM

Pascal Parisot is Paris-based French artist whose original music mixes classic French Chanson, Latin beats and Brazilian harmony. He first scored a minor hit on French Radio in 2000 with Ca Alors! off of his first album Rumba. The witty, yet literate lyrics positioned him as a direct heir to Serge Gainsbourg, but his DIY sound, heavy on 60's keyboards, vintage drum machines and cha cha beats, was pure Parisot. His two following albums, while not big commercial successes, established him as an cult singer, songwriter and producer who collaborated with such talent as Julie Delpy and Thierry Stremler. One of his latest projects, Radiomatic, takes on obscure Yéyé classics re-arranged with Parisot's Signature Sound and the added lead vocals of Fredda, whose ethereal harmonies have graced most Parisot's music. His other current project, Les Pieds Dans Le Plat, which is geared towards children, has become hugely popular in France. This will be Pascal Parisot's first US appearance. He will be joined by Fredda and some special guests and their repertoire will be drawn from all of Pascal's albums.

Bad Reputation: Pierre de Gaillande Sings Brassens.

From the 1950's through the late 70's, George Brassens redefined French Chanson. He was an anarchist bard whose songs were sometimes raunchy, sometimes polemic, often poignant, and always steeped in classic French poetry. His songs, unlike those of his friend Jacque Brel, never became known outside of France, mostly because of the language barrier.

Franco-American singer and composer Pierre de Gaillande has taken on the impossible task of translating Brassens' songbook, to astonishing results. He has stuck to the rhyming scheme and verse length of the original songs, thus matching the melodies perfectly. He has re-arranged the music with a cinematic sensibility, using a combination of guitars, clarinets, lapsteel and Charango. The best way to describe the record would be to compare it to the perfect movie adaptation of a book classic. Think Stanley Kubrick or Raoul Ruiz. $15

IAN AXEL WITH SPECIAL GUEST GREG HOLDEN

Tuesday, March 2 at 7:00 PM

UK singer/songwriter Greg Holden's self-released debut CD "A Word In Edgeways" was immediately featured on iTunes as one of "Today's Best Singer/Songwriters" just a week after its release. A few months later he was again featured on iTunes under "What We're Listening To". This emotive and awe-inspiring artist should start getting use to features...

Just 10 weeks after Greg Holden launched his "Living Room" and "Not My Living Room" Series" on Youtube, he was the featured Spotlight Artist. Since then, he has been Youtube's Spotlight Artist 3 times with over 900,000+ plays. All of this exposure caught the attention of singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson who invited Greg as support for her "Everybody" US tour this past fall.

Now living in New York, Greg is supporting his debut CD along with his recently released new EP, "Sing For the City".

"Fans in every town seem to gravitate to this curious musician whose vocals are a sweet mix of Nick Drake meeting Damien Rice and who lyrics harken of Jeff Buckley or Ray Lamontagne demeanor." -Blogcritics.com

New York based singer/songwriter Ian Axel rings in 2010 with his first full length album, This Is The New Year. Released January 5, the 13-track collection is a follow up to Axel's critically-acclaimed debut EP I'm On To You.

Music supervisors have fallen in love with Ian's songs, placing his music in episodes of MTV's "The Real World" (Brooklyn, Hollywood, and DC), "The Hills," and ABC's "Private Practice." In 2009, Apple included his songs "Afterglow" and "We Are" on the playlists of over 250 Apple Stores worldwide and invited him to perform at over 20 retail stores around the country!

This is the New Year was recorded in Spring of 2009 by Dan Romer, who has also helmed sessions with indie-poppers Ingrid Michaelson and Jenny Owen Youngs. Through tight and melodic songcraft, Ian captures the wonder of our earlier years. He says, "I always feel like I'm trying to reconnect with something I had when I was a kid. Children have a glow and an energy we seem to lose later."

An album of beginnings, This is the New Year taps into that innocence. With Ian Axel in your headphones, it is almost impossible not to feel some part of you beaming, embracing the open future that stretches ahead. Your fresh decade starts now, and this is its soundtrack. $12
