The discovery of a subterranean CIA dungeon in a former riding academy in Lithuania, the flight records of thousands of secret U.S. rendition flights, the testimonies of a growing number of released detainees describing their abuse in American custody-as the evidence around the globe mounts that the United States tortured hundreds of captives in the "War on Terror," people of conscience everywhere are watching to see if those who ordered and carried out the abuse will be held accountable.

Many of those watching are in countries that have successfully confronted their own legacies of torture and human rights abuses. Join us for an evening of readings from documentary and imaginative literature from around the world in which people have stood face to face with their torturers.

Cosponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union and Joe's Pub. $15/$10 PEN & ACLU members / Combo tickets available (for both 7:00 & 9:30 shows) via phone for $20/$15 for PEN & ACLU members.

PIERCE TURNER

On Friday, April 30 at 7:00 PM, Pierce Turner will appear at Joe's Pub.

Whether as a singer or songwriter or performer, Pierce Turner has a penchant for the unexpected and the unorthodox, re-writing the rules for all three endeavors. Sometimes he performs from behind his trusty keyboard backed by a solo instrument (sax, maybe, or violin or trombone!). Or he can be out front- of-house clambering over tables and ordering drinks from the bar. In the middle of a song!

His albums to are equally mercurial, showing influences ranging from his Catholic Irish upbringing to the decadence of Lou Reed's New York, merging the upfront rock of The Byrds, The Beach Boys and The Who to deft touches of Irish trad, folk, jazz, techno, classical and choral harmonies. Tickets are $23.

SPOTTISWOODE: PIANO 45 CD RELEASE

On Friday, April 30 at 10:00 PM, Spottiswoode celebrates the Old Soul Records release of "Piano 45," the Englishman's first solo collection in more than a decade. His rawest and most emotional record to date, "Piano 45" is as stripped down as it gets.

To honor the spirit of the CD, Spottiswoode will perform several songs alone at the piano. However, fans of his band will be happy to know that he will be accompanied by the 7-piece ensemble, Spottiswoode & His Enemies, for most of the show. And there may be a guest appearance or two as well. Still, it promises to be a powerfully intimate soiree. Tickets are $15.

NYU Tisch Presents NORA YORK'S CABARET CENTRAL: OLD SONGS MADE NEW

On Friday, April 30 at midnight, in the final installment of our cabaret series, accomplished cabaret performer, writer, and musician Nora York brings her unique ability to place familiar music in a context and form that makes it feel brand new. A collaboration by a collective of music theatre artists from the Drama Department, the audience will revel in the "diamonds" they reveal. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 with student ID.

Todd Reynolds & LEMUR

On Saturday, May 1 at 7:00 PM, Todd Reynolds, composer, conductor, arranger and violinist, is a longtime member of Bang On A Can, Steve Reich and Musicians and Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project. His commitment to genre-bending and technology-driven innovation in music has produced innumerable collaborations with artists that regularly cross musical and disciplinary boundaries.

Tonight he collaborates with LEMUR, a group of artists and technologists developing and performing with robotic musical instruments. Founded by musician and engineer Eric Singer, LEMUR creates unique, exotic, sculptural instruments that integrate robotic technology into live performances. Its philosophy is to build robots that are new kinds of instruments-as opposed to robots that play already-existing instruments. Tickets are $15.

ISENGART AND THE DIPLOMATS: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ELVIS

On Saturday, May 1 at 9:30 PM, Joe's Pub presents The Importance of Being Elvis.

Not your typical Elvis tribute, The Importance of Being Elvis is a witty exploration of the drama lurking behind every entertainer's secret desire to be "king", presented through an eclectic array of songs taken from Indie Rock, Continental Chanson and New Wave Pop as well as a selection of Presley favorites.

The show was conceived by Isengart and is directed by Julie Atlas Muz, with musical direction by David A. Berger. The Diplomats are: David A. Berger (Drums); Daniel Mintseris (Piano, Keyboard); Yair Evnine (Guitar & Cello); Michael O'Brien (Upright & Electric Bass) Elizabeth Dotson-Westphalen (Trombone); Russell Moore (Trumpet). Tickets are $20.

ZIGMAT

On Saturday, May 1 at midnight, Brooklyn-based electronic / rock group Zigmat's international outfit form to create a multi-faceted performance. That effectively delves into upbeat dance music and torch song balladry. Singer, Monica Rodriguez's web of bilingual lyrics are both decadent and haunting. Tickets are $12.

Tickets can be purchased online at joespub.com, over the phone at 212-967-7555, or in person at the Public Theater Box Office (1 PM to 6 PM), or at the Joe's Pub Box Office from (6 PM to 10 PM) both located at 425 Lafayette Street, NYC.
