KARAN CASEY & John Doyle

Monday, February 8 at 9:30 PM

Karan Casey and John Doyle first came to international prominence as founding members of the influential Irish band Solas. Now deep into their solo careers, the two- one of Irish music's most glorious voices and one of its mightiest instrumentalists - have reunited.

Karan Casey has received critical acclaim from Japan to America as one of Ireland's greatest singers, a standing confirmed by having been twice voted Best Female Traditional/Folk artist by Irish Music Magazine readers and her nomination for a prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Award. The Associated Press calls Casey's voice "...so beautiful, it's almost impossible to avoid falling under her spell."

In the years since going out on his own, John Doyle has developed a duo with fiddler Liz Carroll; recorded two solo albums, including Wayward Son, which The Irish Edition hailed as "a contender for Album of the Year"; and has become a highly sought-after accompanist and session player for the likes of Joan Baez, Eileen Ivers, Tim O'Brien, Linda Thompson, Seamus Egan, Alison Brown and Kate Rusby.

Karan Casey and John Doyle now bring their collaboration to North American and European concert and festival stages. Their new CD is Exiles Return. $20

HAPPY ENDING MUSIC AND READING SERIES
feat Joshua Ferris, Ron Carlson, Padgett Powell & Holly Miranda

Wednesday, February 10 at 7:00 PM

The consistently sold out, Happy Ending Music and Reading Series, chosen by New York Magazine and NY Press as the best reading series in NYC, and singled out by the New York Times Magazine for helping to "Keep downtown alive," features the most interesting storytellers, writers, musicians, raconteurs and personalities, and requires the readers to take one public risk, while the musicians, who perform two short sets with their original, lyric-driven music, are required to play one cover song and try to get the audience to sing along. Called the "most vital authors' series in the city," by Time Out NY, and known for its consistently good taste, Happy Ending has launched careers and proudly, ended none.

Joshua Ferris's first novel, Then We Came to the End, won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, the Barnes and Noble Discover Award, and was a National Book Award finalist. His fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, The Guardian, and Tin House, among other publications. He lives in New York.

Ron Carlson is the award-winning author of four story collections and four novels, most recently Five Skies. His fiction appears regularly in Harper's, The New Yorker, Playboy, and GQ, and has been featured on Chicago Public Radio's This American Life and Selected Shorts as well as in Best American Short Stories and The O. Henry Prize Stories. His novella, "Beanball," was recently selected for Best American Mystery Stories. He is the director of the UC Irvine writing program and lives in Huntington Beach, California.

Padgett Powell is the author, most recently, of The Interrogative Mood: A Novel? (Ecco). He is also the author of Edisto, which was nominated for the National Book Award, and three other novels. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, The Paris Review, Esquire, and other publications, as well as in Best American Short Stories and Best American Sportswriting. AN ANTI-VALENTINE'S MASQUERADE: MINQ VAADKA CD RELEASE w/ SPECIAL GUESTS THE DISGRUNTLED LOVERS

Thursday, February 11 at 11:30 PM

"Utterly bipolar..." - Dr. Jerry Dash

Sexy Weimar burlesque and blistering loser rock crash head-on under the mantle of Minq Vaadka, NYC's newest musical anomaly. Somewhere in the no-man's land between Jack White, David Bowie and Tom Waits, Minq Vaadka chills with his melodies, thrills with his lyrics, and spills his vocal guts and blood all over the stage.

Join Minq for an inebriated evening of telling V-Day to eff-off and be able to say you were there for the release of his debut CD The Plastic Masquerade, as he performs an emotional striptease before your very eyes and ears.

The disgruntled lovers:

The disgruntled lovers are a dark duo (bitter exes, really) who make splendid sounds and share few words. Trading off on different combinations of sparse piano, guitar, drums and voice, they create deceptively massive grooves with next-to-nothing and a little elbow grease. Can't imagine it? Think: a minimalistic take on a White Stripes vibe, splashed with some Dresden Dolls sass and spunk, and mixed in with Regina Spektor's sense of rhythm and luscious lyrics. Or perhaps just picture them as The Captain and Tenille of the low-fi indie scene.

Indulge The Lovers as they unwind a few sordid tales of love, death and insanity by performing selections from their original score to Sanaz Ghajarrahimi's stylishly feverish reimagining of Hamlet -- plus a few other frayed odds and twisted ends. $12

Florence Henderson: ALL THE LIVES OF ME...A MUSICAL JOURNEY - CELEBRATING VALENTINES WEEKEND
Friday & Saturday February 12 & 13 at 7:00 PM
Known to millions as Carol Brady, America's Favorite Mom, Florence Henderson , a multi-talented actress, talk show host, performer, recording artist, author and Broadway veteran has had an outstanding career.

Celebrate Florence's Birthday and Valentines weekend with her hip nightclub concert: All The Lives Of Me...A Musical Journey, a retrospective concert on her 50+ year career.

Variety said: Charm, song and forthright honesty are hallmarks of Florence Henderson's lite-biographical show "All the Lives of Me." The enjoyable 80- minute "musical journey" is from one of America's favorite TV moms." John Simon (Bloomberg Radio) wrote: "If you had the misfortune of missing Florence Henderson this time round, be confident that such an indestructible and indispensable artist will show up again somewhere on your horizon. When she does, avoid committing the same mistake twice."

GREG LASWELL

Friday, February 12 at 11:30 PM

Greg Laswell is already a critic's darling, and with the right marketing his second album will give him a proper shove into the mainstream. Through Toledo is an impressive collection of densely lyrical, deeply melodic indie pop that refuses to settle into predictability. "Laswell -- on guitar, piano, drums, and production -- is clearly more than just another singer-songwriter. - rhapsody.com

Greg's music has been placed in several TV shows including "Grey's Anatomy", "True Blood", "Shark", "The Hills", "Without a Trace", "Damages", "Cold Case", the season finale of "NUMB3RS", "90210", "Smallville" and "One Tree Hill" . "What a Day" is featured in the 2006 film "Danika" starring Marisa Tomei. $12

John Wesley HARDING AND THE ENGLISH UK

Saturday, February 13 at 9:30 PM

John Wesley Harding has released 15 albums, ranging from traditional folk to full on pop music. His most recent pop release Who Was Changed And Who Was Dead (2009), recorded with The Minus Five, was a critical smash, garnering considerable airplay: the album is "terrifically catchy" (New Yorker), while Harding is "hyper-aware, expertly tweaking the lyricist's game at every turn" (Los Angeles Times), with "lyrics that dazzle" (Wall Street Journal). "Typically wry and acerbic" (Billboard), the songs "reveal a greater maturity and lyrical polish..." making it "the most pleasing album Harding has made since his first studio effort, Here Comes the Groom" (All Music Guide).

John Wesley Harding has been joined onstage by Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, John Prine, Bruce Springsteen (with whom he recorded a duet on his album AWAKE), Joan Baez, Peter Buck, Evan Dando, David Baddiel, Rick Moody, Tanya Donelly, Josh Ritter, Rosanne Cash, Colin Meloy, Scott MacCaughey and Robyn Hitchcock amongst others. He has appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

His first novel, Misfortune, under his real name Wesley Stace, was published to great acclaim in 2004 by Little, Brown (USA) and Jonathan Cape (UK) - translations followed in Italy, France (where it has become a bestseller), Holland, Taiwan, Japan, Spain and Israel. It was nominated for The Guardian First Book Award, The Commonwealth Writers' Prize, The James Tiptree, Jr. Award, listed as one of the books of the year in The Washington Post and The Boston Phoenix, and was one of Amazon's Top Ten Novels of the Year.

His second novel, By George, was published in August 2007; it was one of the New York Public Library's Books To Remember of 2007, and Booklist Editor's Choice for books of the year. He has recently completed his third , Charles Jessold, Considered As A Murderer (to be published by Jonathan Cape in the UK in Sept 2010). Stace is currently artist-in-residence at Fairleigh Dickinson University, NJ, where he curates the Words & Music Festival. He reviews for the Times Literary Supplement. $20

JESSICA 6 is 'DIAMOND LIFE"
2nd annual Valentine's Day Sade Tribute Show
Saturday, February 13 at 11:30 PM

While on ten-month world tour in 2008 with the acclaimed Hercules and Love Affair, Nomi Ruiz, Morgan Wiley, and Andrew Raposo bonded over a mutual love for Sade and a longing to see the increasingly rare performer live. Not ones to wait around, they took the synergy they share on stage--that which permeates the original music they create as the phenomenal Jessica 6--and recast themselves as Diamond Life.

Diamond Life is about seeing the world through a champagne kaleidoscope; the stuff of sparkling emotions fashioned into rebel songs about love; a call to arms embracing you in sweet summer's sweat.

An unabashed tribute band, Diamond Life is the music of Sade reconceived and featuring the incomparable Ms. Nomi Ruiz, whose smooth, dark and dreamy vocals have garnered comparisons to Sade Adu herself. This will be the second performance ever of the yearly tribute which after debuting at Highline Ballroom last Valentine Day is now looking forward to opening hearts at the very romantic Joes Pub which should make for a beautiful evening for Sade, Jessica 6 fans and in general all those who love in NYC. $15
