THE SECRET SISTERS

Thursday, September 16 at 9:30 PM; $12

"The Secret Sisters echo and promise better days. They are a breath of fresh air". - T Bone Burnett

The Secret Sisters are Laura and Lydia Rogers, two not-so-secret sisters who specialize in old country harmonizing, and they're set to release their Jack White produced debut 45 which will feature a cover of Johnny Cash's "Big River" on one side and a cover of traditional folksong "The Wabash Cannonball" on the other.

White plays guitar on "Cannonball" (his hands are all over this thing) and Carl Broemmel from My Morning Jacket stops by to play some pedal steel. Only 150 of these singles are being pressed and the vast majority of them are being sold in Nashville so good luck getting a hold of one. If you're ambitious enough, you can go to the Third Man Records homepage and preorder it or just go to their Myspace to hear the songs. Their full-length, Silver Threads and Golden Needles is due October 5 on Universal. -Ben Krusling

A SECOND CHANCE: A NEW MUSICAL THEATER WORK BY TED SHEN

Presented in association with The Public Theater's Musical Theater Initiative

Monday & Wednesday, September 20 & 22 at 7:00 PM; $20

Are we granted a limited amount of love in one lifetime?

A Second Chance tells a compellingly adult love story that is unusually candid and revealing about the first year's emotional struggles faced by a widower and a divorcee who meet in mid-life. As the delight they find in each other shifts from a welcome respite to a vital part of every day, they are drawn toward the possibility of creating a new life together, something neither one knew if they would be fortunate enough to find again. Presented with the overwhelming challenge of freeing themselves from their painful pasts, will the couple endure?

Direction by Jonathan Butterell

TOKO FURUUCHI

Tuesday, September 21 at 7:30 PM; $20

Japanese pop star Toko Furuuchi is back again. After the performance last year to celebrate the 15th anniversary of her album "In Love Again", she has been continuously working aggressively with top Japanese artists both as a singer and songwriter. Her latest album PURPLE was released in Japan on March 3rd.

Toko picked up music while listening to Billy Joel, Hall & Oates, and Elton John records while in junior high school. After graduating high school in Connecticut, Toko moved to back to Japan to embark on a recording career. She saw her first release "Hayaku Isoide" followed by an album "SLOW DOWN" in 1993. Her turning point as an artists came when she released the 4th album "Strength" in 1995. The album was a huge success feat. renowned artists like David Sanborn. In 1996, her single "Dareyori Sukinanoni" and its album "Hourglass" dominated the Japanese CD charts. Her follow up album "Koi" in 1997 became a double platinum hit in Japan. Recently, Toko has been performing many acoustic piano shows throughout Japan.

KEVIN DUNN

Tuesday, September 21 at 9:30 PM; $17

"...a smart, engaging, innovative artist whose groundbreaking work has been unjustly overlooked - until now." - Anthony DeCurtis, Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone

"... a must for fans of the idiom, revealing Dunn as a key link in the chain between British and American new wave. Don't believe me? Then toss out all your R.E.M., dB's and Feelies records and see what's missing." -- Nashville Scene

"Snotty, literate pop from this underground master of the post-punk era, sounding like the missing link between Brian Eno circa Tiger Mountain, and XTC circa Drums and Wires - while also truly ahead of its time, like it could have been recorded by kids today. Oozing with angular hooks, synth bleeps and fuzz guitar wizardry, a compilation of songs that should be - and will be, and already are - classics." - Robert Schneider, The Apples in Stereo

"By blending electronic music with an art-rock palette, Dunn crafted a small but precise body of work, revolutionary in its own right, while fronting bands with such names as the Regiment of Women and the Radical Centrists. But he was too far ahead of his time for the new wave scene..." -- Creative Loafing

"An art rocker with a sly sense of humor, Dunn combines wry lyrics and guitar flash...Check it out if you like: Brian Eno's pop albums, Sparks, early Robyn Hitchcock." -- Mother Jones

One of the most distinctive and influential figures on the vital southern new wave scene of the late 1970s and 1980s, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, and self-styled "guitar egghead" Kevin Dunn has not performed in New York City in over three decades. As a producer, Dunn's credits include the B-52s' "Rock Lobster" 45 and the first 45 and LP by Pylon, while as a performer (both under his own name and as a member of the revolutionary Fans) he crafted startling music that bristled with invention, melodic wit, and exploratory zeal - a uniquely southern refraction of the textural and lyrical possibilities of avant-garde pop. Dunn was recently the subject of No Great Lost: Songs, 1979-1985 (Casa Nueva), an acclaimed anthology of his early work that included the entirety of his 1981 cult-classic album The Judgement of Paris, fully restored from the original master tapes, along with rare and essential single, EP and LP tracks.

GABBY YOUNG

Wednesday, September 22 at 9:30 PM; $14

"Imagine a Victorian circus having a baby with Beetlejuice and raising it on a diet of Tori Amos and a slightly brighter Nina Simone" - The Fly

"Wildly flamboyant and with a good selection of brassy-backed, jazz-edged songs" - The Guardian

"A mixture of Pre-Raphaelite beauty and antique shop. As much art-school as Agent Provocateur." - Mojo

"Gabby's vocals range from Enya-like swoons to unexpected Bjorkesque pantomimic outbursts and always, always command notice." - Disorder

Meet Gabby Young, the most entertaining soul on the circus scene. With a live following most independent singers would chop out a lung for, Ms. Young's effervescent reputation continues to precede her - which conveniently for our beloved belle has calumniated in 15 major UK festival bookings this year...and counting.
