HOLMES BROTHERS: CD RELEASE

Thursday, March 4 at 7:00 PM

From winning multiple Blues Music Awards to sharing stages and recordings with Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Willie Nelson, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel and others, The Holmes Brothers have seemingly done it all. Recently though, The Holmes Brothers confronted a stark reality when brother Wendell was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. Tight-knit on and off the stage, they found strength in their family, friendship and faith to overcome this setback.

With Wendell's victory over the disease, the group emerged fully energized and inspired to create the deepest, most original, most satisfying album of their career. Feed My Soul, produced by longtime friend of the band and platinum-selling artist Joan Osborne, is an album born from this harrowing experience. The songs deal with friendship, loyalty, family, aging, illness, as well as politics and the current state of the world, while still maintaining the patented Holmes Brothers sense of humor.

With their deeply soulful singing, uplifting harmonies and unsurpassed musicianship, The Holmes Brothers continue to grow as artists. Billboard declares, "It seems like The Holmes Brothers get more assured and exciting with each passing year. They remain a musical force unto themselves." Triumphing over adversity led directly to the creation of Feed My Soul, as the band turned what may have been a career-ending event into the best album in their long history. With the depth of the songwriting and the power of their performances on this new album, The Holmes Brothers serve their extended family of devoted listeners a rich musical banquet for the soul. Tickets are $20.

SOMI AND CHANDA RULE: A DRAMATIC READING OF LISTENING TO ROOTS AND VOICING BRANCHES
Saturday, March 6 at 7:30 PM

Listening to Roots and Voicing Branches: Transnational Freedom Songs of the Black Atlantic is a multi-media performance piece that attempts to redress intra-racial tensions in the African Diaspora through the sonic and visual presentation of the Black Atlantic's cultural memory. Written by African vocalist Somi and African-American vocalist Chanda Rule, the two women introduce new modes of listening to indexical Black histories. By using Jazz as the foundation of their musical conversation, the piece strives to carve out a new space of cultural belonging and exchange, while the artists weave between song, (dis)harmony, and spoken word - creating acoustically and electronically layered textures of rhythm, movement, textuality, and sound. Directed by Elizabeth Herron. Original Score by David Gilmore. Tickets are $20.

DEAR COMPANION TOUR FEATURING BEN SOLLEE AND DANIEL MARTIN MOORE
Friday, March 5 at 7:00 PM & Saturday, March 6 at 9:30

Dear Companion, out February 16th on Sub Pop Records, is collaboration between three Kentucky musicians: the songs are written and performed by Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore, produced by and featuring Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk. Recorded in the first half of 2009 in their home state, Dear Companion explores their ties to the place they love and aims to draw attention to the problem of mountaintop removal coal mining and its impact on the people and heritage of central Appalachia.

A portion of the proceeds from Dear Companion will benefit Appalachian Voices, an organization devoted to ending mountaintop removal and finding a better way forward.

Ben Sollee infused his much-lauded 2008 debut album Learning to Bend, with his unique synthesis of folk, soul, and bluegrass. No Depression put the album on their top five of 2008, Paste listed him on The Best of What's Next, NPR raved, and music blogs continue to provide Sollee a steady torrent of praise. His impressive debut also landed him prominent spots on the festival circuit, including Austin City Limits and Bonnaroo, as well as a riveting set on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

After serving in the Peace Corps, Daniel Martin Moore won over Sub Pop Records in 2007 with an unsolicited demo of deceptively simple songs, and found himself working with producer Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, U2, The Shins) on his first album, the 2008 release Stray Age. With Stray Age, Daniel became a critical darling, eliciting comparisons from Nick Drake to M. Ward.

Mountaintop removal is a radical form of surface mining that uses massive explosives to blast off several hundred feet of mountaintop in order to expose and remove thin seams of coal. The resulting rubble, or overburden, is then pushed into nearby valleys, burying streams. This has devastating impacts on the land, air and water of local communities. To date, this practice has destroyed more than 500 mountains and buried more than 2000 miles of streams.

Appalachian Voices created iLoveMountains.org in conjunction with local, state, and regional partners to grow and support the national movement to end mountaintop removal coal mining and help create a prosperous future for the region.

MEL FLANNERY TRUCKING CO.: CD RELEASE / THE MUMBLES

Tuesday, March 9 at 7:00 PM

"Wherever you go for the rest of your life, her song will stay with you, for Mel Flannery is a moveable feast." - Eugene Melino, New Sun Newspaper

With a monstrous voice and organic sound, Brooklyn-based Mel Flannery Trucking Co. offers an experience unlike any other indie band today. MFTC is an exercise in balance; blending complexity & accessibility, heartbreak & humor, wisdom & youth. Experience their envelope-pushing avant-soul sound live to celebrate the release of As It Turns Out on Halogen Records.

The Mumbles are a Brooklyn, NY based Avant Soul Duo -- a tiny band with a mighty sound. Using two keyboards and a drum kit, they combine soul music with avant and old time jazz to create "pop songs in the key of partying down" (Time Out New York). Keysman Keith Burnstein and drummer Ethan Shorter met in the rhythm section of a 14 piece hip hop orchestra, soon striking out on their own in late 2006 to write tunes that would become Mumbles mainstays. As a duo, the boys distilled songs to their essence, delighting in a dynamic that "...marries the bedroom intimacy of a singer-songwriter, with the expansive musical prowess of a psych jazz outfit" (Seven Days Vermont). Tickets are $12.
