Playwright/actor Joe Gulla's "The Bronx Queen" returns to Joe's Pub on November 15th for its final performance of 2016.
Written and performed by Gulla, "The Bronx Queen" is the winner of the 2016 Downtown Urban Arts Festival's "Audience Award". Directed by Brian Rardin, "The Bronx Queen" is the first chapter of Gulla's multi-award-winning, "Bronx Queen Trilogy".
This Joe's Pub performance comes hot on the heels of the staged reading of Gulla's "Garbo." This invitation-only reading was held at the The Dramatists Guild last month. Press notes describe "Garbo" as a "two-act autobiographical play... with a European twist!"
Says the playwright, "I'm incredibly excited about both of these passion projects! My "Bronx Queen Trilogy" is finding a lovely home at Joe's Pub. This is incredibly poetic to me because "The Bronx Queen" is about my struggles as a Bronx gay boy yearning to "own" his artistic voice and his place in Manhattan's downtown arts scene. To be performing "The Bronx Queen" in Joe's Pub, THE place that defines the "downtown arts scene" is, well, shocking, wonderful and still somewhat beyond my comprehension. As for "Garbo", the reading was a huge success and my director, Brian Rardin, and I are wildly very excited about its prospects for 2017!"
Gulla's "Bronx Queen Trilogy" has garnered a multitude of awards over the years. As mentioned, "The Bronx Queen" was awarded the 2016 DUAF "Audience Award". It was also awarded the 2012 and 2013 United Solo Awards for "Best Comedic Script" and "Most Popular Show" respectively. Joe's "Faggy at 50" (Chapter Two) won the 2014 United Solo Award for "Best One Man Show" and "Daddy" (Chapter Three) garnered Joe the 2015 United Solo Award for "Best Comedian". This past September, Joe's "Sleeping With the Fish" played the Emerald Theatre Company's "Out of the Closet" Festival in Memphis, Tennessee. His play, "Fall and Rise" played the 2016 Hollywood Fringe Festival where it was awarded an extended run. As an actor, Joe played "Joey" in San Francisco's "Tony & Tina's Wedding" for many years and "Frankie" in Off-Broadway's "My Big Gay Italian Wedding". He also starred on NBC's "LOST", one of television's first adventure reality series.
"The Bronx Queen" will be performed at Joe's Pub on Tuesday, November 15 at 9:30. Tickets are $20.00 and available at The Public's Box Office (425 Lafayette, NYC). For more information, visit www.JoeGulla.com or click here.
