BIRDLAND JAZZ CLUB will present pianist and composer Jason Yeager and jazz violin virtuoso and composer Jason Anick – co-leading a stellar quintet celebrating their new album Sanctuary – on Monday, October 14 at 7:00 PM. Friends since high school, they join forces to create “jazz beyond borders” that integrates the spontaneity of jazz improvisation with the melodic lyricism of pop and the dynamic group interplay of chamber music. Their new recording features jointly composed original compositions exploring various manifestations of “sanctuary” in the modern world, as well as fresh arrangements of music by Wayne Shorter and Frederic Chopin. In addition to Anick on violin and Yeager on piano, the evening at Birdland will feature Billy Buss on trumpet and flugelhorn, Greg Loughman on bass, and Mike Connors on drums. Julie Benko, Broadway star and Birdland regular, as well as Yeager's spouse, will be the special guest vocalist. There is a $30 music charge. Birdland is located at 315 West 44th Street in New York.

Their new album, Sanctuary – due out October 11 from Sunnyside Records – builds on the foundation set by the pair’s previous outing, United, which was named one of the best albums of 2017 by DownBeat Magazine. That album marked the culmination of a nearly lifelong friendship and collaboration; Anick and Yeager met for the first time at a local jam session as teens in the Boston area. Since then, both have continued to collaborate while establishing flourishing careers as composers, performers, and educators, with both serving on the faculty at Berklee College of Music.

Jason Anick has earned a reputation as an imaginative improviser, versatile composer, and insightful educator. He has launched a variety of musical projects over the years, including the Rhythm Future Quartet and the Americana-inspired Acoustic Trio. Anick has also shared the stage with an array of artists including John Jorgenson, Tommy Emmanuel, Hamilton de Holanda, The Jim Kweskin Jug Band, Celia Woodsmith, and Ward Hayden and the Outliers.

Jason Yeager recently released two highly acclaimed recordings: Hand in Hand with his Broadway actress-singer spouse, Julie Benko; and Unstuck in Time: The Kurt Vonnegut Suite, with his eponymous septet and special guest Miguel Zenón. In addition to his seven albums as a leader, Jason has performed and recorded with the likes of Luciana Souza, Ran Blake, Sean Jones, Ayn Inserto, and George Garzone. He regularly performs at such renowned venues as Carnegie Hall, Birdland Jazz Club, and Smalls Jazz Club.
