ALEX WAKIM is an internationally awarded and performed first generation Lebanese-American composer living in New York City. He received a Bachelors of Music from Kansas State University, and is continuing his musical education at New York University, pursuing a Masters in Film Scoring. His aesthetics gravitate towards mixing traditional and modern sounds, and exploring how these sounds can signify new meaning. These tastes have led to intriguing collaborations, the most notable being An American in Beirut, an original musical based on Wakim's own experiences as a Lebanese-American, originally developed with Jonah Kirkhart. This heritage has also inspired the concert pieces Mountains of Lebanon; Syria, A Prayer for Peace; The Soft Mist; and The Madman.

His composition Childhood Recollections was commissioned by the Alba Music Festival in Italy, and he has won the Kansas Soundscapes competition, a blind submission composition contest open to all Kansans, three years in a row for Cascading Beams (2018), Hot Blue (2017), and Clarinet 4 (2016). His true passion lies in composing for media as he has developed music for documentaries, video games, and short films: most notably, Refuge in the Heartland, a documentary exploring refugee children who are resettled in Kansas.

Having written for jazz big band, chamber ensembles, narrators and clarinets, orchestras, and voices of all kinds, Wakim's diversity also allows him to explore the vast array of musical sensibilities found in film music. Most recent projects have included scoring My Grandmother's Grape Leaves, a documentary exploring Armenian culture seen through the food; Return to Fall, a story about the heavy metal sub-culture in Syria before the war, and a metal band that had to flee Syria due to the war; and a self-produced workshop and performance of An American in Beirut, taking place this summer. Wakim also loves coffee and cats, and thinks that rain and other forms of water are quite lovely.
