Hotel Rex (562 Sutter Street between Mason & Powell), a boutique hotel right in the heart of Union Square in San Francisco takes its inspiration from European art and literary salons of the 1920s and 30s (think bohemian Paris-book & poetry readings, literary salons, conversation, art shows, cabaret music paired with good wine & food). Each week the hotel presents a Salon Series of intimate events designed to encourage dialogue and appreciation of art, literature and music: From a book launch or a reading by an author to cabaret music or an entertaining bit of a magic show paired with food and wine.
Salon Series partners include Absolute Magic, Litquake, SF Performances, and Society Cabaret. Tweeting at Salon Series events is encouraged @HotelRex.
Magic at the Rex, is presented every Saturday night at 8:00 pm in the Sutter Streetside Cocktail Lounge. Sleight of hand and other tricks by Sebastian Boswell III and Adam Sachs of San Francisco's long running and always sold out Absolute Magic. Advance reservations can be arranged online.
Society Cabaret Shows in the Salon Room: Tickets for Cabaret Shows start at $20 with no fees or minimums and reservations are encouraged. Based on availability, walk-ins for Cabaret Shows can pay at the front desk. Advance reservations available at societycabaret.com or by calling 415 857-1896.
Bay Area theater critic Chad Jones described Society Cabaret in the Hotel Rex as "the intimate cabaret room that feels like a cross between a piano bar, someone's living room and a hip New York salon." The Cabaret showcases an array of Bay Area performers in Broadway revues, tributes to composers such as Stephen Sondheim, themed performances such as the February 14 "Love! A Valentine Cabaret as well as select comedy shows. For a full line up of shows and performers, check the current Society Cabaret calendar.
A newly added attraction to Society Cabaret Salon Series schedule at Hotel Rex is the once-a-month (first Friday each month) "Friday Playwright Night." Staged as readings (professional actors but no set, props or costumes), this is an interactive opportunity to participate in the development of new plays. Playwrights need to "hear" their words come off the page, and with the actors interpreting the work, this is the next step in the evolution of creating a play. The writers are there to engage in dialogue with a dramaturge and audiences are invited to give feedback. $15 admission and food/beverage available for purchase.
Also part of Hotel Rex Salon Series is the new Friday evening "Singers Songwriters" shows, presented FREE (with no cover charge) from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Library Bar. In a casual setting, local Bay Area composer/singers will perform original music blended with popular music, with a focus on positive social values, as part of the ongoing dialogue fostered by the arts & culture events at The Rex.
