On February 15, 2010 one time Tony-eligible actor Andrew Kober of Broadway's Hair makes his New York solo debut at Joe's Pub with a concert event titled Koberet. As previously seen by about 100 Ohioans in the auditorium of Shaker Heights High, this updated Koberet is an even more self-indulgent version of the phenomenon that took the Midwest by storm eight years ago. In it, Broadway's most famous hetero drag queen muses on his life so far... because no one else will.
The 11:30pm concert is part of Sh-K-Boom & Ghostlight Records' ongoing concert series, and is being directed by David Ruttura with musical direction by Matt Hinkley. Kober's concert will feature surprise special guests, and follows directly after a 9:30pm concert by his Hair castmates Caissie Levy and Kacie Sheik. On reviving Koberet for his New York fan base Andrew says, "Don't worry - there won't be too many show tunes. And my mom, Olga, would be thrilled if you bought tickets."
Perhaps just as well-known in the New York theater community for his Twitter following as his performance in Hair, Kober is offering an online contest to allow one and all to help choose a song for him to perform. Over the past few weeks, fans were asked to submit song suggestions via Twitter, and the most popular ideas will now be put to a vote. Interested parties can participate in the "Have Your Say in Koberet!" contest by emailing their pick from the song list below to andrew@andrewkober.com or tweeting to Andrew via @andrewkober (www.twitter.com/andrewkober). The winning song will be revealed the evening of the show. The song choices are:
- "In the Heights" (from In the Heights)
- "Party in the USA" (Miley Cyrus)
- "And I Am Telling You (I'm Not Going)" (from Dreamgirls)
- "Let's Stay Together" (Al Green)
- "A Song for You" (Leon Russell)
Andrew Kober grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio where he was forced to join the Drama Club by his 6th grade girlfriend. After getting his BFA in Acting from Carnegie Mellon University, he joined the First National Tour of THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE. He made his Broadway debut in the Original Cast of the Tony-Winning Revival of HAIR. With HAIR, he's performed on The Tony Awards, The View, Good Morning America, The Early Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, Carson Daly's Times Square New Years Eve, and the last two Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades. This spring, he'll make his West End debut when HAIR opens in London. Kober can be heard on Ghostlight Record's Grammy-nominated cast recording of the new Broadway cast of HAIR.
Koberet is being produced by jokr productions (Joey Oliva & Katie Riegel) and Noah Cornman / Sh-K-Boom & Ghostlight Records. Tickets are $15 and available now online at joespub.com (
