Frank Dain returns to the cabaret stage this month with his first solo show in 13 years, in The Magic of Mathis. In four performances at New York City’s Metropolitan Room, Dain will bring fresh interpretations to such Johnny Mathis signature tunes as “Chances Are,” “It’s Not for Me to Say,” “Wild Is the Wind,” “Misty” and “The Twelfth of Never. ” Contributing creative arrangements is Dain's frequent collaborator, Musical Director Kathleen Landis. The Magic of Mathis will also include infrequently sung jewels as “99 Miles from L.A.,” “Yellow Roses on Her Gown,” “I’ll Be Easy to Find” and “Photograph,” all part of Mathis's remarkable 56-year career. Multi-award winning director/entertainer Lennie Watts is directing.
Dain has a substantial performing history as well as an extremely popular and critically lauded recording to his credit. Of Dain’s debut CD, I Thought About You, Roy Sander wrote: “One of the loveliest and most romantic recordings I’ve heard in years.” Show Music declared the CD to be “... a thoroughly romantic affair, in no small part because of Dain’s warmly expressive baritone.”
After appearing in many regional and off-Broadway theatrical productions, Dain made his New York City Town Hall debut at The Mabel Mercer Foundation’s summer Cabaret Convention entitled Grand Nights for Singing, and performed at the Foundation’s first cabaret convention in Philadelphia at the Prince Theatre. As a solo act, he brought his enviable baritone and warm personality to shows at Don’t Tell Mama, Steve McGraw’s, Danny’s Skylight Room and Judy’s. He was a frequent guest of Kathleen Landis during her residency as a pianist/singer at Café Pierre, and has appeared with her at the Cocktail Terrace in the Waldorf Astoria and the Sheet Music Society’s event celebrating the release of the book, "The Complete Lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein II." He and Landis recently concluded a 16-week run at Nino’s Tuscany. Dain has also performed at numerous benefits and has been featured on Jersey's Talking, hosted by Lee Leonard, and live on Jim Lowe's radio program.
Dain is an editor and a popular graphic artist for the performing arts community in New York. Dedicated to theater, he is also an associate to Kurt Peterson and his company, James William Productions (JWP). JWP is dedicated to creating, nurturing, developing and producing new works for Theater and Musical Theater. The Federation of American Musicians, Singers and Performing Artists recently named Dain “Best Editor-in-Chief” of a Cabaret Publication in their just published Who's Who in Jazz, Cabaret, Music and Entertainment. He is also the recipient of the Jeff Matson Award for his contribution to cabaret as a performer, graphic designer, writer and editor.
