In celebration of Black History Month, the Fordham United Methodist Church presents actress Harriett D. Foy's "My Soul Looks Back In Wonder: A Journey Through The Memories of a People in Word and Song," based on first-hand experiences of slaves on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Fordham United Methodist Church in the Bronx.
Ms. Foy's performance idea was originally sparked almost 10 years ago by her professor; the late Dr. Henriette Edmonds. "I have always loved Mahalia Jackson's How I Got Over, so I took the line from the song, my soul looks back and wonders and just made if fit the theme of my piece. I chose the old spirituals because they are beautiful and support the emotion of the people who endured slavery. It was difficult to choose the narratives because all of the stories were so amazing..."Ms. Foy received her BFA in Acting from Howard University and is a native of North Carolina, who grew up in Brooklyn and Maryland. Her television credits include Law and Order and Rescue Me. She has appeared on Broadway in Mamma Mia, Off-Broadway Crowns (Audelco Award - Outstanding Ensemble) and is featured on cast albums for Reunion, Inside Out and Lone Star Love.
