Legendary folk artist Ferron will team up with edgy, indie-rocker Bitch for a show on October 24th at NYC's Joe's Pub. The stripped-down performance unites two generations of intelligent, lyrically-charged female performers. Bitch, who has released albums for Righteous Babe and Kill Rock Stars, produced and released Ferron's latest record, Boulder, for her own Short Story Records. With a vision to produce this CD, Bitch went to the remote woods of Michigan, and camped outside Ferron's house in her RV, with her studio that consisted of a laptop computer and one microphone. She convinced her idol to let her re-record the songs that had been such an inspiration.
Ferron and Bitch have been touring all summer together, combining a light-hearted banter with songs that captivate and go right to the heart. The result is a powerful union of two poets, made richer by the fact that they come from different generations. An odd billing at first glance, the two are gaining a lot of attention for their intimate and funny live shows.
Boulder, Ferron's fourteenth record, is a beautiful collection of songs once again revealing Ferron's established strengths – her words and her unrivaled way of illuminating and connecting through music.
Boulder features inspired performances of classic Ferron songs by longtime fans such as Ani DiFranco, The Indigo Girls, Samantha Parton (Be Good Tanyas), and Jd Samson (Le Tigre), alongside Ferron herself. Bitch's production has lent a fresh sound to the album, while still maintaining a raw and sparsely arranged aesthetic.
With the new record, Bitch was able to capture the essence of Ferron's songs and challenges youth to do what youth is rarely encouraged to do: tune-in to the ones who have come before, hear their wisdom and grow from it. In this recording one finds the voice of a legend and the story of an elder.
Boulder was produced by Bitch, mixed by Tucker Martine (Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, Bill Frisell) and mastered by Jon Cohrs (Laurie Anderson, Pink Martini, Quasi).
Short Story Records is an independent music label launched February 2008 by Bitch and her manager Amanda Stark. Together and individually, they have many years of experience in the recording industry - with companies from Righteous Babe to Sony. Motivated by their genuine love and appreciation of Ferron's music, they united in this new endeavor to proudly release Boulder.
