The Days Of Cabaret Gratitude

Day Eight:  The Wild Card - Mark Nadler

Mark Nadler’s name has been synonymous with cabaret for a while now.  To count the years might be a bit ungallant but it has been more than a decade, maybe even more than two… and Mark Nadler has never done anything else but cabaret.  Yes, he is sure to have taught a Master Class here and there, he may have reached out in other directions, for his own personal enjoyment, perhaps in his passion for yoga, but the simple fact of the matter is that, from the moment he put a non-tap-shod foot onto a cabaret board, he has never stepped off again.  Whether playing piano in elegant lounges, performing solo shows in nightclubs, going over the top with wild antics in resorts, entertaining the night away on cruise ships, or sitting out front in the director’s chair, Mark Nadler has made cabaret his life.  And cabaret has thanked him for his efforts by bestowing upon him legions of fans, a massive family of friends, and years and years of acclaim for being one of the industry’s great entertainers, which is exactly what he is.

A Mark Nadler show is a brand unto itself.  The gentleman is wildly creative and wickedly original, sometimes playing all the parts in an elaborate script while simultaneously playing the piano and tap dancing (the tapping is a big part of the Nadler brand).  Other times, he can be an esoteric sophisticate, educating while entertaining, but never from a place above the heads of his audience.  As broad as his humor is as wide as his open arms, and as bright as his smile is as deep as his connection to the material.  Every show Mark Nadler presents has been drafted and crafted with intention, as well as researched and rehearsed within an inch of its life so that the product he provides his audience will send them home happy, satisfied, and feeling like they have just returned from a great vacation where the food has been excellent, the weather unbeatable, and every adventure exciting enough to last til the end of their days.  Mark Nadler is as at home on the stage at Carnegie Hall as he is in the dining room at Sardi's, and he has proven himself adept at painting with the broadest strokes required for a Symphony Space or the more intimate nuances needed for PBS.   Like a cross between a machine and a miracle, Mr. Nadler has built, from the ground up, an eye-opening number of shows over the years, various of topic and bountiful of enjoyment, oftentimes on his own but frequently in the company of dear friends who can't wait to get back on a stage with him.  He is a consummate professional and a constant sell out (ticket sales, not artistic integrity).  His audiences are always filled with faces from the industry, people who want to support their colleague but also people smart enough to know never to miss a Mark Nadler show.  He’s an original, the kind who, after being created, inspires the breaking of the mold.  There is no cabaret community without Mark Nadler, so it’s a good thing he’s not going anywhere, because he keeps everyone on their toes, sometimes tapping, sometimes just trying to get up to where he is, in order to taste the rarified air of the incomparable.
