Broadway World Cabaret continues its series about the artists for whom our team is grateful.
Orfeh and Andy Karl - The Cool Kids
So, there's this couple. They are in love and it shows when they play out together. Their love is infectious, and their audience falls in love with them, during their shows. The audience falls in love with Andy, the audience falls in love with Orfeh, the audience falls in love with Orfeh and Andy. That's a lot of love for one concert... but it's Andy and Orfeh, so it's warranted. But it isn't just the love that leads the proceedings when the Karls are on the stage.
It is all about The Cool Factor.
Andy Karl and Orfeh met doing a Broadway play. They have both done a few of those, as well as some film and TV, and sometimes they even play on the same franchise. But when Orfeh and Andy Karl put on one of their club acts it's not an act, it's an event, it's a happening. The Karls are the most gorgeous, the sexiest, the fiercest, the grooviest, the coolest couple to set foot onto a stage in a concert that runs the gamut from musical theater to Prince, from One Direction to Lady Gaga. Mister and Missus Cool tear up the stage like Mick Jagger and Tina Turner have arrived in town, with dancing, foot stamping, prancing, vocal lunacy, and a band made up of people so enamored of one another that the pride shines from everyone's eyes, not only for the work they are doing, but for the company of artists they have created. Thanks to these quality rock concerts in venues both intimate and grandiose, Andy and Orfeh have built up an enormous following of devoted fans that make every show a sell out. The Orfeh and Andy brand is ferocity, musicality, and loyalty, and the entire Team Karl spreads joy, wherever they go.
Case in point: when this writer covered the Karls at a recent Chelsea Table + Stage appearance, I called a friend that I know suffers from chronic depresion, and that I knew was in the middle of a down swing, and I invited them to please be my plus-one: happily, that person said yes. For one hour and twenty minutes my friend clapped their hands, stamped their feet, cheered, waved those same hands in the air, and even threatened to get up and dance or sing along. When we left the club, my friend said it was the happiest they had been in a long, long time. From depressed and despondent to gleefully gazing up at the stars on the way to the subway: that is the power of Orfeh and Andy. They are pure medical grade joy.
For a performing artist to have that reaction from a member of the audience - it doesn't get better.
